Jay's POV

I heard Hailey swear and looked over just in time to see Kim hit the ground. "5021 George, second officer down, roll another ambo to our location," I called into my radio, wondering what was taking our backup so long. As Kev provided cover, I quickly made my way to Hailey.

"Is she hit?" I asked, replacing her at Adam's side. Hails quickly looked her over, trying to find any injuries. There was blood on Kim's jeans and on her hands, but best that we could tell none of it was hers.

Hailey shook her head. "I can't see anything. I don't think she's hit. I don't know what made her pass out, if it was stress or-" she paused, not finishing her thought. "She better be fine. They both better be."

Just then our backup finally arrived. I left Hailey with our two teammates to keep them alive,  and I jumped back into the firefight. Within a few minutes it was over. One offender was dead, the other three in cuffs. Kev and I handed them off to patrol and hurried outside to find both Adam and Kim being loaded into ambulances. Hailey saw us coming and hurried over to give us a quick sitrep.

"Kim's conscious but not in great shape. They have her on oxygen, and I heard them say they might have to sedate her if she doesn't calm down. Adam," she paused to glance over at the other ambulance. "It's not good."

Kev nodded and hurried over to Adam's ambulance, which pulled away as soon as he climbed inside. I gave Hailey a quick hug before she headed back to Kim's ambulance and I jogged to the truck.

Hailey's POV

I leaned against the wall of Med's waiting room, which was, at the moment, mostly occupied by cops. In the middle of it was Kim, sitting in the exact chair that I had a year ago, waiting for any news. She had been released a little while ago, the doctors chalking it up to an anxiety attack, and she hadn't moved since.

Jay walked back into the waiting room and over to me. I looked at him expectantly.

He kept his voice low so that no one would overhear before the doctors came to give an official update. "Will says that the surgery is just about done. There was a lot of bleeding but they managed to get it under control. They're optimistic." He glanced over at Kim. "He won't be conscious yet, but she should be able to see him soon." I nodded, too relieved to say anything. He pulled me into a hug, his chin resting on my head. We could've stayed that way for ages, but we saw Voight walking up to the waiting room and quickly separated. Jay squeezed my shoulder, and I gave him a smile in return before heading over to sit with Kim. She was wearing a pair of scrubs that Natalie had found for her and a CPD sweatshirt that I had left in the back of Jay's truck. She looked up as I sat down, her face stained with tears. I knew what it was like to sit there worrying about the person you cared about most in the world, the person who you hadn't told how much they meant to you, and wonder if they would be okay or if this would be the time you lost them for good. I pulled her in for a hug, and as I did so I heard footsteps behind me. We both turned to see the Halstead that we didn't see on a daily basis. I heard Kim sharply take in a breath, and she gripped my hand tightly, no doubt trying to prepare herself for whatever she was about to hear.

"He's out of surgery." Kim let out a sigh of relief. "It went well. He's still unconscious and will be for a little while, but I can take you to go see him."

Kim nodded through tears of relief, and quickly followed after Will.
