Sarah remained quiet and stared fiercely at her reflection in the mirror. He shouldn't have done that. He deserved it. Why would he have hugged me? She smacked her forehead and realized that he had heard her crying. From now on, I'm going to cry in my Wing. No one will be able to hear me. She could still hear Will pleading for her to come out so they could talk. I put my guard down yesterday. That will never happen again. I can't trust anyone.
But then how will you find your parents? A voice said inside her mind.
I'll just contact Beth...But wait, the note said not to contact the police until I have all of the information. Dang!
"Sarah? Please! Come out!"
Sarah turned on the sink and splashed her face with cold water. It's a new day. I can succeed in ignoring him. Yesterday was a mistake. One mistake. A mistake that Will will never forget. She took her time, and when she turned the sink off, she heard nothing. She smiled and was glad she would not have to bump into him. But when she opened the door, Will was there on the floor looking up into her green eyes with a longing that made Sarah feel pity for him.
If it had been another time, I might've let him in. But no one can enter my safe full of secrets.
She walked into her room and locked it. Will could not help, but let his eyes follow her. What have I done to deserve this? The one thing I want in this world and I cannot have it. Will got up and went to go get breakfast. Sarah took her time, getting ready because she decided to play the Cat and Mouse game. Everyday she'll lure Will and everyday she'll reject him. Maybe after a while, he'll get tired of me and quit. After all a guy only holds a crush for about a week until he finds some other victims.
As she walked down the stairs, she could feel Will's gaze. She stared into his eyes with more force than usual. Will shook violently. The stare said Come and get me. I dare you.
"Good morning Sarah!" Mrs. O'Leary said cheerfully. "Did you have a good night's sleep?"
"Yes it was wonderful, thank you."
Mrs. O'Leary beamed with pride and gave Sarah a bowl of oatmeal. Sarah ate as though she never ate before. Sarah put her bowl in the sink and ran upstairs.
She grabbed her backpack and rushed through the door. "Sarah--"
"Yes?"
"I can just drive you, you know."
"It's fine. I'd rather walk."
Before Mrs. O'Leary could say another word, Sarah closed the door.
She breathed the fresh of air of autumn and started down the street. Soon, she realized she was not alone. A man just behind her was following her. Sarah started to walk even faster and made sharp turns, but she could not lose the stranger. She decided to do the one thing no girl would've done. She stopped and waited for the stranger to catch up to her.
"What do you want?"
The man stopped. Shocked that she would've stopped by her own will. He remained silent.
Oh well, might as well keep on walking until I reach a populated place.
Instead of waiting, Sarah got her phone out and dialed 9-1-1. The man paled at the sight of the phone. "Please, don't call the police." He pleaded. "I'm only here to help you."
"With what?"
"Your parent's case."
"How do you know about that?"
"I was a co-worker at the company your parents worked at. Your mom seemed really nice."
"How did you know where I lived? Have you been following me?"
"No! No!"
"I'm not a stalker. I just looked you up."
Sarah took a moment to think about this. "All right, you can talk to me after school." She turned and continued walking, but was interrupted.
"If I'm dead, just look under the porch underneath your Wing."
She swiveled around and fiercely asked, "How did you know about that?"
"Everyone in mansions has a wing and a porch. I thought you knew."
"No, I didn't know."
"Where should we meet?"
"At my house. My former house. I'm sure you know where it is."
"Yeah, I'll meet you after your school ends."
Sarah walked away with a sudden lightness. What am I doing? I trust a random stranger, but I don't trust Will? Something's wrong...
It's because this random stranger has information about your parent's murder. Will has nothing for you. The voice said.
Sarah continued walking, shaking off the future events and entered the school.
