Trying and Testing (ii) [f]

"I told you everything would work out" he said, somewhat smugly but with a sincere tone to his voice.
Riley looked at his through her blurry eyes, laughing slightly before saying "we're actually going to be parents"
She interlocked her fingers with his, smiling when he squeezed her hand and pressed his lips against her temple.

Weeks passed and the couple did not tell anyone their news. In this time, Riley had a sonogram and they saw their baby for the first time. Naturally, they had both cried with joy again after seeing it wriggle around on the screen.

Thanksgiving was fast approaching and provided the perfect opportunity to announce their pregnancy seeing as they were hosting at their house. Both of their families were attending, meaning they could announce it once, rather than have to speak to everyone separately.

The day crept up on them and soon the couple's house was crowded with people. James' parents and three sisters were in attendance, along with Riley's parents and Emily. Everyone was socialising in the lounge when Riley stood up. James walked over to her, wrapping an arm loosely around her waist.

"Um, can I just- we have something to say" she started, trying to hold back a telling smile. The room fell into silence and all pairs of eyes watched the couple closely. "I'm pregnant"
James cleared his throat, "we're having a baby" he added, grinning widely.

The room erupted in a burst of congratulations and shrieks of delight. Emily was the first person to tackle the couple into a hug, releasing James but still holding her little sister tightly in her arms. She was elbowed out of the way by her mother who began to smother her daughter with affection.

Looking over her mother's shoulder, Riley chuckled seeing James trying to duck out of the way of Deborah's kisses. This was a battle he eventually lost, surrendering and cringing as his mother kissed his head several times.

When she finally had the chance to breath, Riley went to a draw and pulled out the ultrasound scan that depicted their baby, showing it to their family. By now, Deborah was noisily blowing her nose and Piper was grinning very widely. James' youngest sisters were rambling about what activities they would teach their niece, apparently forgetting the 50% chance of it being a boy. The two new grandfathers were beaming with pride. Emily was attempting to control her mother who was already suggesting baby names.

Laying in bed that evening, Riley pulled out her phone and opened Instagram. James read over her shoulder and she typed a short caption, tagging him in the photograph before posting it. He immediately liked it and saw the influx of notifications start to spam her phone.

After scrolling through the comments for a few minutes, the couple simultaneously put their phones down and rolled onto their sides, facing each other. Riley shifted her body closer to his and looped one arm around his neck.

"I love you so much"  she told him, lazily combing her fingers through his thick hair. "I can't wait to start this new chapter together"
James caressed her side, running one hand under his shirt that she had elected to sleep in. Lifting it over her subtly rounded stomach, he flicked his gaze between it and her eyes.

"I love you more" he assured her. "You're going to be the best mother Ri, I'm so lucky to have you"
Riley scooted closer to him again, this time so their noses were touching. "I'm the lucky one"
James was about to protest when she smashed their lips together forcefully, pushing him onto his back as she rolled on top of him. When they broke apart, they looked at each other intensely.

Suddenly, they both blurted, "our baby is the lucky one"
Giggling because they said the same thing, Riley bowed her head and reconnect their lips in a passionate kiss.
