"Um, Elora, why aren't you in bed?"
I stumbled into the kitchen. "I'm hungry."
My sister sighed. "I was gonna bring you lunch. Go back to bed."
I tried to walk out of the kitchen, but ended up tripping and falling.
"Loser," Aspen huffed, picking me up and walking me back to my room.
I had been sick for weeks. No one knew what the sickness was. It could be the flu, cold or any sickness, really.
"Thanks," I sighed, once my sister had helped me back to my room and I had settled underneath the covers on my bed. "Now please go and get me lunch, I am starving."
Aspen rolled her eyes. "Coming right up, master."

My sister watched me wolf down the food in a matter of seconds.
"You have a big appetite for a teenage girl," she said, picking up the plate and smirking at me.
"Hey, women can have big appetites too. Do you think that only men can eat a lot? How sexist is that?"
Aspen rolled her eyes, muttered "Whatever," and rushed out of my room before she could catch my sickness.
I honestly felt bad for Aspen. Instead of getting the chance to live a normal teenage life- she had only turned thirteen about a month ago- she was busy taking care of stuff around the house while our father was at work and while I was bedridden. Well, I guess her life wasn't that normal at first, considering the fact that we live in the middle of a forest, isolated from the rest of society.
I leaned back against the silky pillows on my tapestry bed, sighing. I really wish I had a normal life. I wish I had friends, and not only my family and cat to talk to. I wish I could go to a school and live the normal highschool experience that I had read about in so many books, but nope. I was stuck in a giant mansion in the middle of nowhere, and that's how it had been my entire life, and for all of my family's past generations.
My cat, Crumb, jumped up onto my pile of blankets, purring and settling between a nook in my arms. I smiled, stroking her head.
I loved Crumb. She was a black cat with reddish fur around her ears, splotched across her legs and part of her back, and on the tip of her tail. Her eyes glowed a copper color ("Very much like your's," my sister had told me, "Except yours are more red."), and I had always been able to tell how she was feeling and what she wanted. I had always had a good connection with all of the animals I met.
Crumb was the only pet I had. I wouldn't mind having another pet or two, but I was okay with only my cat. She was hard enough to maintain on her own. Fortunately, I got to see animals in the forest all the time. Or, I used to until my dad told me that it was off limits after my mom got murdered.
An elvin tribe in the forest had killed her. No one knows a lot about that tibe, besides the fact that they weaved in and out of our family history, killing someone every couple generations. They had been very quiet for the past few generations, until they killed my mom. I wanted to go out into the woods and find them, but my dad wouldn't let me. He said it was too dangerous. "Besides," he had said, "generations of our family have tried to track them down. What difference could a sixteen year old make?"
I didn't like the argument he made. The only reason I hadn't tried going out into the forest was because I was sick. But when I was better, the first thing I would do would be to sneak out when they were all asleep and try to find the elves.
No one got to kill my mom without getting hurt.
I looked out my window. It was already dusk. I hadn't noticed how much time had passed, but I guess that was to be expected, spending all my time in my room. The days had started to blur together.
I sank into my pillows, closing my eyes and falling into a deep sleep.
