The Guardian And The Thief

Silence. Be quiet. Let me hear the whispers of the dreams as if my name they were whispering in my ear. What do they say? I don't know, they all talk at the same time. One by one I need to listen to them, like my mother did when she lived in this world. If only I had believed her when she told me about her job...

<<Help>> the dreams ask in a quiet cry. Yours too. I lift my gaze to the sky, hoping to admire a happy blink and smile at the joke that, on this occasion, seemed funny to them, but it doesn't happen. There is no laughter, no tranquility, only anguish and invincible fear. Where are you, my dear friends? Do not hide.

The canvas that shapes the night looks particularly empty, because with the moon and many of the dreams that freely used to decorate it, hidden, there is not much more than darkness.

<< You don't have to fear. >> I assure. In a whisper, I ask the stars to come out, and a large part of them obey my words. I ask them what scares them and the answer leaves me as cold as the world would soon be if their terror were to come true. << To disappear. Many already did. There is a Dream Thief >> in a fearful murmur, in unison they answer.

I swore to Mom, before she died, to continue with her work, but I no longer know how to protect the dreams. I have to find the thief, of course I have, but then what? How am I going to stop them?

(...)

It didn't take me long to find their hiding place, because the Dreams have seen everything and will see everything. On the outside, the Thief's hiding place looked shattered, dark, like the sky, because of them, now  was. Oh, but just entering, I feel the warmth of the stars, the light the night is missing today dazzles me, and the screams of the dreams stun me. I manage to open my eyes and see the Thief, a little girl no more than six years old, who, with enthusiasm, admires the dreams and counts them as if she didn't know it will be in vain.

I greet her, and the poor little girl looks at me with fear. Fear ... That feeling that she, to the stars, is causing; that peculiar emotion to which dreams are so sensitive. They blink. They blink with the pity I don't allow myself to feel; They blink in a silent embrace that seeks to reassure her.

The girl asks for my name, but I do not give such information. Instead, I respond with a question. <<Don't worry, I won't do anything with the stars. I just want to watch them, I want to imagine what it feels like to have a dream >>, her answer was. Surprised, I speak once again <<You have to return them. If those dreams are not in the sky, their owners disappear >>

She is silent. The silence is sad, but just when I think of repeating my words, she finally reacts, but not as expected. She refuses. She says she wants to have a dream, and if she's not capable of it, she will take others' because they're beautiful. She also murmurs that she may find her family's.

I ask the girl if she is alone, and in response she says that when she lost her family, she lost her dreams; that she doesn't have a star and that's why she likes to watch them. I laugh and explain to her that if she didn't, she would not exist, so she asks me to find her dream and take her to it in exchange for the stolen stars.

<<You know if I take you to your dream... You will die, right? >> I ask, incredulous. Nevertheless, she doesn't give in. The night is almost over, but today, the moon will not fall alone, but with the little angel that is now in front of me.

The missing people rose with the first rays of the sun as the Thief fell into my arms.

I always believed the work of the Guardians was unknown, but now I know it's not, it is just called by the thousand names of death.
