21 : Rapid Test

" But it is not allowed under hospital regulations, Doctor Montenegro" Doc Villa replied

Bawal na mag1st assist ang mga interns, hospital protocol and I definitely agree to Doc Villa.

The patient has been sadated already, the anethesiologist already gave his signal to start the procedure which Doc Luigi agreed to.

" Knife" Doc Luigi started. That's how some surgeons identify scalpels. They call it knife. Hindi na umapila pa si Doc Villa but I know that this will go under a look out once the procedure ends.

Kinabahan na ako ng mabuksan na ni Doc Luigi iyung pasyente. I should be used to scenes like this but the feeling is different when you get to do the procedure instead of handing surgical instruments.

Magaling iyung OR nurse dahil tama lahat ng nilalahad niya sa akin.

Napansin kong medyo nanginginig pa iyung kamay ko habang nag-aassist. I swear, I am sweating bullets right now. Doc Luigi looked at me.

" Relax, Babe. I am here" My system hyped at his voice. It relaxed me atleast. Napatingin sa amin ang scrub nurse at si Doc Villa. They may think that something is wrong.

" When doing surgical procedures in the brain, it is crucial that you must stay calm. The more you get to feel uneasy, the more you get to do the risky things." He explained as we both dug more into the patient's cranium.

" I'll open the space for you, you'll remove the tumor" Wika niya habang nakatingin na ngayon sa akin.

I looked at him. Kinakabahan ako. I wasn't prepared for this.

" Doc I-" I wasn't able to finish my sentence when he interrupted

" I'll assist you, don't worry" He said. We both looked back at the surgical procedure being done. This is no longer a dummy. Totoong pasyente ang inooperahan ko. And there's no room for mistakes.

" Focus, Baby" Mashindi ako nakakafocus dahil sa pinagtatawag niya sa akin. We are in the OR tapos Babe Baby ang tawag niya sa akin.

I breathed in and focused. Dapat ay steady lang ang kamay ko. Bawal ang nanginginig na kamay. I remembered how Doc Ibarra used to do this kind of surgery. Good thing I'm always his favorite OR nurse. Kahit sobrang strikto ni Doc Ibarra, atleast when it comes to major surgeries like this, he always asks for me as his scrub nurse. Kaya palagi kong nakikita kung paano niya ginagawa ang ganitong procedure. Nilakasan ko ang loob ko bago ko tinanggal iyung tumor. Doc Luigi assisted me. Ramdam ko ang mga mata nilang nakatutok sa akin.

After I removed the tumor, Doc Luigi had spoken.

" Good job Babe. I'll handle it from here" He said. Nakahinga na ako ng maluwag

Inaasahan kong magsusumbong si Doc Villa sa nangyari at hindi ako nagkamali ng kutob. Doc Villa filed a complain after what happened in the OR. And based on OR protocols, he has the advantage. Tama naman kase ang punto ni Doc Villa.

I was immediately called few hours after the OR at the regulatory commission office.

Hindi na ako nagulat ng ipatawag ako. Good thing that the patient is well and fine. Vital signs are normal and is stable.

Naabutan ko si Doc Villa na kausap ang board. He's explaining his side. Sitting on a chair facing the board members. May malaking table tapos may limang nakaupo na regulatory commission members na nakikinig sa explanasyon ni Doc Villa.

" Why did you allow Doctora Fajardo to take in charge of the surgery, Doctor Montenegro? You know it's forbidden. What if the patient died just because you allowed an intern without experience to take in charge of the surgery?" Tanong agad ng isa.

" I am the head surgeon and I want doctora Fajardo as my first assist. I have the right to decide. I know the risk and the possibilities. May it be negative and positive. I know that she is an intern. But her capabilities are better than what an intern can do. The operation went with my assistance. I think my presence was enough not to account the operation as negligence. If in case something happens to the patient, I will take full responsibility" Wika ni Doc Luigi. He defended me. Ganon na ba siya kalakas loob na itaya ang lisensha niya para sa akin? What if I failed? Paano kung may nagalaw ako? Paano kung namatay iyung pasyente? Ang daming tumakbo sa isip ko.

" Bakit mo tinanggap ang pagiging 1st assist Doctora Fajardo? You should have declined your superior" Wika naman nung isa.

I cleared my throat.

" Forgive me for disrespecting the rules of the hospital but It is true that I did the surgery with Doc Montenegro's supervision. Nevertheless, I still am an intern and not allowed to stand in the position given to me by Doc Montenegro." Paumanhin ko.

" But certain conditions apply to not following the rules and you know it Doctora Fajardo" The other said

" I will take the responsibility. Spare doctora Fajardo." Wika ni Doc Luigi.

Natapos ang pag-uusap ng naunang lumabas ang mga board. Naiwan kaming dalawa ni Doc Luigi.

" Thank you for letting me experience doing the procedure. Pero sana hindi mo nalang ginawa iyon. Madadamay pa kita kung sakaling pumalpak ako" honestly told him.

" I believed in you, Ivana. I won't risk the life of my patient but it's different when it comes to you. I know you too well. Alam kong kaya mong gawin ang operasyon" He stated calmly.

" Salamat" I said

" Kumain ka na ba?" He asked. Alas dos na pala, umabot kase kami ng halos apat na oras sa OR kanina.

Biglang umiba ata ang ihip ng hangin. Noon lang hindi ko siya pinapansin tapos ngayon nag-uusap na kami.

" I need to go home" Wika ko. Nakita ko kung paano siya yumuko.

He breathed in.

" Ang hirap ng may kaagaw sa 'yo Babe. At nakakaselos na, sobra" He whispered before leaving me dumbfounded.
