ray's pov

that night, the four of us were separated. emma and madeline, along with gilda, went to mama's room to check on the babies. we formed a plan earlier to use carol to see where the tracking devices fro the farm are located. mama had a "pocket-watch" that tells her where kids are. however, they don't specify who people are. while they were gone, norman and i proceeded to talk about sister krone and the plan while doing our chores.

madeline's pov

while emma was taking care of carol, gilda and i were watching over the other babies. i was worried, however, that emma would look suspicious. emma was hovering over carol for a while now, and i saw gilda occasionally glance at emma. i tried to take care of as many babies as i could while emma was observing carol.

suddenly, i was able to hear emma thinking out loud. i tensed up a little bit, worried if gilda will find out about the plan too soon.

"emma, i need to ask you something. about last night..." gilda spoke quietly, walking over towards emma. i walked over to emma's other side, since i was curious.

emma put down carol onto her cradle and looked behind carol's small ear. glida and i both observed, and there was a small bump behind her ear.

"is that a bug bite?", asked gilda.

"mama told me a while ago that blood was drawn from there to test for diseases", emma replied. i suddenly remembered as well. how could i have not been suspicious?

"naila, phil, mark, and conny all had it. everyone's ear had it..." emma gasped.

"do i still have mine?", asked gilda.

"i don't think so, gilda", i responded.

emma looked at gilda's ear.

"it's gone, so me and m wouldn't have it either."

"well, of course. i'm younger than the both of you". gilda answered.

i felt myself get stiff again. emma kept leaking suspicious information right in front of gilda. i was scared since gilda was pretty smart and could probably figure out something's different with emma.

as soon as the daily tests were over, all four of us tried to act normal and disappear into the forest. norman just ran off, emma chucked a ball over a long distance, and ray and i just simply left our spot at the tree after a few minutes.

"so, the tracking devices are in our ears?", norman asked emma.

emma responded, playing with the ball a little bit. "yep. mama told me and madeline that that's where babies get tested for diseases. sorry we didn't realize it sooner."

"there's no need to be sorry! now, we know where the tracking devices are. then, the next step is to figure out-"

"how to break the devices!" we all said together.

"we can't remove it from our ears" i thought.

"the tracking devices are not actually that functionally useful" ray responded.

"what? they aren't?" emma asked.

"that's because the signal does not specify the individual. she has no confirmation about where people are. she also doesn't get any notification if people go near the gate or the walls."

"so, can there be a notification when the devices get broken?" i asked.

"that's a possibility, and it it's true, there would be some sort of alarm" ray said.
