madeline's pov

"good morning, maddie!"

this time, jemima woke me up.

"good morning, jemima! i'll wake up now..." i said, tiredly. i had to stretch my arms a little bit, yawning a bit.

after pulling on my uniform and getting ready for the day, i walked with jemima to the dining hall.

"good morning, emma! good morning, norman!" jemima and i called out.

i knew emma was not acting like herself. normally, she would be running around and yelling. but i had not heard her voice yet. there was no smile on her face when she was talking to norman. i assumed norman was talking about last night. norman is the smartest out of everyone here at grace field. he never got a question wrong on the daily tests since we were all younger. emma put a smile back on her face, passing out the plates.

"good morning, ray!" i said.

"good morning, madeline. so, looks like jemima is with you today." ray turned towards jemima and knelt down so he was at her level. "make sure you let me talk to madeline today, okay?"

"okay, ray! go ahead and talk to your ~girlfriend~."

"wait a minute... jemima, what are you talking about?!" i exclaimed.

"i thought you liked maddie, ray. you always talk to him by the tree everyday", jemima replied sweetly.

"well, jemima, you made that assumption pretty quickly! but don't tell anyone, okay?" ray playfully said, still with bent knees, looking at jemima.

"okay, fine. oh wait, there's mama!" jemima ran away from me and ray to go talk to mama.

"so, a 5 year-old was able to tell i like you in that way... i guess i am that obvious" i heard ray mutter. i tried to stifle a laugh, but i couldn't help but embarrass ray a little bit. he tried to give me a deadly glare, but he couldn't help but chuckle a little bit as well.

after breakfast... ray's pov

once we finished the daily test, the scores came out. mama was at the front of the classroom, about to announce the results.

"congratulations, emma, norman, ray, and madeline! you four all have perfect scores! good job!" mama gushed.

at all of a sudden, a stampede of kids ran over to madeline's desk. her desk was not very far from mine, it was only diagonally in front of me. she was greeted with several congratulations. i couldn't help but smile. madeline is a really likable person, and she deserved the perfect score. still, i couldn't believe that she was secretly as smart as maybe i am. madeline didn't have perfect scores since she was 7 and i was 8 years old.

once we were outside, i wanted to grab madeline's hand and take her straight to the tree. however, she had a paparazzi of tiny children follow her, asking her to help study for the daily tests. i could tell that she would most certainly hold study sessions and help out the young kids. that would be such a madeline thing to do. after about five minutes, the kids went out to play their outdoor games. madeline, like she promised, walked over to my direction, plopping down right next to me.

"so, ray, about what i wanted to tell you yesterday. i'll keep it short and concise. i wanted to tell you that i feel the same way about you! sure, you might not be the most social person out there, but you care about the people you love, and i like that side of you. thanks for being a great person, ray.
