One afternoon, Emma was at her house getting ready to go to her favorite restaurant, The Oceana. She was going to be walking there with her best friends, Emily and Cheyenne. Emma thought about her parents and then went into thought about how she did not have a great past. She took a sad glance down at her heart-shaped locket. Inside there was a picture of four people: her mother, her father, her sister, and her little brother. Her mother and her brother had sadly died a couple moments after childbirth, and her dad got in a car accident and died with Emma's sister. Emma had stumbled away that night, with a hurt leg, all the way to the nearest house. That house happened to be where Emily and Cheyenne were having a sleepover. Cheyenne's parents adopted, and took care of her until she was old enough to go into the world and create her own life. As she drifted away from that tormenting memory, Emma heard the door open.
"Are you ready to go?" Emma asked Emily and Cheyenne.
"Yeah, are you?" Emily replied, walking in with Cheyenne.
"Yeah. I'm starving! Let's go already!" Cheyenne said excitedly.
They started walking to the Oceana. When they were about halfway there, they saw another girl who looked lost.
"Are you lost?" Emily asked, turning her thoughts into a sentence.
"Kind of. I'm new to Guam. I came here to attend college and become a doctor. This is my second time in college. The first time-" she stopped her sentence and covered her mouth. She looked scared.
"The first time what?" Cheyenne wanted to know.
"I- I have to go. I'll-uh-bye." The girl stuttered.
"Wait! Where are you headed?" Emma asked.
" I- I'm trying to find The Oceana." The girl replied.
"That's where we are headed right now! I'm Emma and these are my best friends, Emily and Cheyenne. It's nice to meet you," Emma said.
"I'm Sydney," she said. She sounded relieved to change the subject.
"Who do you share your dorm with?" Emma asked.
"Oh, I share a dormitory with two snotty girls named Autumn Western and Jessica Brown. They gossip a lot," Sydney said, "Too much, in my opinion. I wish they would just leave me and the other kids alone."
"Well, we can show you the way to the Oceana," Cheyenne told her.
"Thanks," Sydney said, smiling, as they started walking towards the Oceana. "I was hoping I would get something good to eat there."
"Oh, you will. It's one of the most popular restaurants in the village." Emily said.
"So what do you do for a living?" Sydney asked.
"Well, I am a certified diver, and so are they. We get paid to find all kinds of new and interesting fish. We go diving from our submarine almost every weekend." Emma replied.
" I am an inventor," Cheyenne said, "Hey! You should come diving with us sometime!"
"It is really fun!" Emily agreed.
"What do you do?" Sydney asked Emily.
"I draw the blueprints for Cheyenne's inventions," Emily said, shrugging, "So I'm basically an artist."
Emma looked down at her locket. She thought about all her friends, especially the new one. Who knows what they were going to run into at the deep depths of the sea.
