Katia's POV

The sirens continued to blare through the dorm rooms and we were all confined to a small space. Novice guardians were in front of us Moroi, protecting us from the Strigoi. It wouldn't do much good though; they were weaponless. Some fire users, like myself, could help them burn though. Sadly, it used too much energy and there weren't too many of us here in this confined space. We watched Christian Ozera do something similar to help Rose Hathaway last year when the school was attacked. But they have graduated.

The door suddenly exploded open and the novices jumped to their feet, bracing themselves for an attack. No Strigoi came. The alarm stopped and us, the terrified Moroi, slowly glanced up to see the guardians. Guardian Alto was among them.

'They're gone now,' one of them said. 'You're safe to come out.' We slowly walked out and the novices began to relax. We all crowded inside the chapel in case they came back but the guardians didn't think so; it was close to sunrise. A sort of roll call began and we made it into two different groups: Moroi and dhampir.

'Aleksei Conta?' Guardian Alto asked. 'Aleksei Conta?' he asked once more. A lump rose in my throat as I stood up to address him.

'He got taken away. They took him away,' I repeated, tears rushing to my eyes and I hastily wiped them away. Guardian Alto sighed and the roll call resumed with only four other Moroi missing. He turned to the guardian who was doing roll call for the dhampirs and they exchanged whispers. The other guardian nodded and Guardian Alto made his way to the front of the chapel.

'We have six dhampirs and five Moroi missing,' he began, his booming voice echoing throughout the chapel. 'Stay inside as we search the grounds for bodies.' We all shivered in unison as he and a few other guardians made their way outside into the now sunlit grounds. After a few moments, they reappeared. Guardian Alto went to the front of the room.

'All six dhampirs have shown up dead and four of the Moroi also have died,' he said. 'One Moroi is still missing and we believe he would either have turned or would later be a snack.' Oh no. Please not Aleksei. 'Aleksei Conta is still missing.' A sob escaped my body and the tears that I had tried to keep back were now streaming down my face like endless rivers. He cannot be a snack. Or worse, a Strigoi. He just cannot. Before he could resume whatever he was saying - I had tuned out - something in his pocket started to vibrate. His cellphone.

'Guardian Alto speaking,' he said, walking off of stage. Whispers started to spread through the chapel; guardians don't have their cellphones called often, only in an emergency. After another moment or two - we couldn't hear what he was saying, he had walked outside - he stormed through the chaple doors with a look of fury and rage placed upon his face.

'We are sending out a rescue team for Aleksei Conta,' he roared.

'Why?' asked one of the newer guardians. They hadn't experienced the last attack.

'Because he is the last of his bloodline. Camille Conta went outside the court to visit her parents. The Strigoi found out and murdered them all. Aleksei Conta is the last in the Conta bloodline.'
