 Chapter 26

Elizabeth sat on the couch with a steaming cup of coffee in her hand. Today was going to be a lazy day, she told herself as she watched her two boys play with Lego’s on the floor. They had Brandon for a week now, and for once in her life she finally knew what it was like to be content–really content with whom and what she had become.

A mother.

Even after giving birth to Brandon she’d never really felt like she was a mother, until now.

She gazed on Brandon’s face and he was laughing at something Zeb had said. His little boy smile would brighten up any room. It was his sweet, angelic innocence that finally opened her heart. If she was being honest with herself, Brandon was the very best part of both her and Zeb.

Lounging back against the couch, she carefully brought the cup of coffee she was holding to her lips and silently marveled at how much her life has changed over the last few weeks.

First it was Zeb. He suddenly reappeared in her life, caught her off guard and in the process he managed to steal her heart.

Then there was Brandon who came literally bouncing into her life, giving the both of them so much more than either of them could have ever imagined. She laid her hand across the front of her stomach thinking of the little one that was growing inside of her now.

Elizabeth let out a contented sigh. The novelty of being pregnant was still so new to her. Her first pregnancy with Brandon had been a nerve wracking experience. The fact that she felt so alone made it utterly horrifying.

As if he heard her thoughts Zeb raised his head and smiled. For a long moment their eyes interminably locked and she knew without a doubt that this time was going to be so different. Come hell or high water Zeb would be right there, at her side, every step of the way.

Zeb leaned over towards Brandon with a mischievous glance in Elizabeth’s direction as he started to whisper in his ear. She couldn’t help but to grin at the two of them. Little Brandon looked so much like Zeb that it was uncanny at times.

She watched Brandon stand up and nod once at Zeb before running off to the kitchen.

Elizabeth turned to him and lifted a questioning brow. “What are you two little devils up to?” she asked him curiously.

Zeb stood in one smooth motion and crossed the living room; careful to step over the scattered Lego’s and sat down beside of Elizabeth on the couch. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her into his side, placing a tender kiss to her temple.

“Now that is the million dollar question, isn’t it,” he teased. When she just stared at him he patted her knee and quietly added with a low, husky chuckle, “You’ll see soon enough, sweetheart.”

Elizabeth felt her stomach do a double dip. She loved the way his voice sounded when he was sitting so close to her. The sound started deep in his chest and reverberated in a slow, southern drawl. It was sexy and mysterious all at the same time. She rested her head on his arm and waited for Brandon to come back in the living room.

“Mommy, Mommy!” Brandon yelled out excitedly while barreling back into the living room. His blue eyes shone brightly in his small, cherubic face.

Elizabeth lifted up onto the edge of the couch and couldn’t help but to smile at the little boy standing in front of her as he shyly pulled his hand out from behind his back. In that hand he held a card and a single pink rose.
