the sharp pain pierced into your chest. within seconds, you fell back onto the hot vegas dirt beneath you. before you blacked out, you heard one last shot ring through the open air.

you and spencer drove back to your hotel. you leaned your head back against the car seat, looking out the window at the darkening sky. it ranged from shades of violet, orange and yellow contrasting against the red and purple. the colors seemed to dance together in the sky, merging through the clouds that casted a shadow on the land. peeking behind the clouds, a blue sky faded into the colors. you blinked slowly as you took in the sight. spencer's fingers flexed around the wheel as he took a glimpse at you, a tense look in his eyes. as the car rolled to a stop infront of a red light, spencer spoke,

"y/n, what are we?" he rested one hand on his leg, keeping the other on the wheel. caught off guard by the sudden interrogation, you lifted your head from the car seat and looked over at him,

"what do you mean?" your eyebrows knitted together. spencer licked his lips,

"what are we?" he repeated, "co-workers? friends with benefits? friends?" he asked. you turned your head forwards towards the road infront of you in thought. to be honest, you didn't even know what you were either,

"what do you think we are, reid?" you deflected, fiddling with the rings on your fingers. spencer blinked and shrugged his shoulders. you saw him out of the corner of your eye and asked another question,

"what do you want us to be?" you catechized again. he stayed silent and still, pushing the gas pedal as the light turned green. he shifted in his seat as he waited for you to talk. you blinked slowly and shook your head,

"are you staying in the hotel or at your apartment?" you asked before the silence got uncomfortable. spencer swallowed, keeping his lips pressed together tightly before vocalizing,

"i'll stay in the hotel for tonight." he made up his mind quickly as he remembered you were staying at the hotel. you nodded slowly, riding the rest of the way back to the hotel in silence. you kept your eyes out on the sky, watching it darken to a deep black. the stars scattered across the sky messily, yet in a graceful and elegant way. space was mesmeric to you, you loved it as a child and still adored it to this day.

spencer finally pulled into the parking lot of the hotel. unbuckling your seatbelt across your body, you got out after the car lurched to a stand still. spencer followed soon after. you walked inside the lobby with him, glancing at the few members of the team at the complimentary bar. you nodded at them and entered the elevator. your eyes felt heavy, the familiar feeling of lethargy in your muscles. luckily, you and spencer were on the same floor. you hooked your arms around his left bicep. resting your head against his shoulder as you walked out of the elevator and down the hall, you sighed,

"what's your room number?" you said, your voice slightly muffled by the side of your face pressed into spencer's arm,

"713. you?" he responded. you smiled against him,

"715." you yawned and he nodded. he first walked past his room and 2 doors down, dropping you off at your room. you unraveled yourself from around his arm and looked at him as you unlocked your door,

"i'll see you later." you mumbled. spencer nodded,

"see you."

he watched you disappear behind your door, a frown immediately tugging at the edges of his lips. neither of you could answer what this odd chemistry was, nor could you answer what you wanted to be with each other. spencer shook his head in disappointment as he walked back down the hall and to his own room.
