Dear Diary,

Shalom. I found out bad news today. Mama told me that despite how hard we've been working, we only have enough money for one ticket in steerage. We were hoping to be able to pay for two tickets in second class, but we don't even have enough for one. Mrs. Simon was able to lay out enough money to pay for a second ticket in steerage, so we'll have to make do with that. Oh, I've heard such terrible stories about steerage! There will be sick people everywhere, and vomit and excrement. There will be nasty rodents, and not enough food to go around. I'm dreading this journey already. Mama says when we arrive, we will make enough money to somehow bring the others over. I hope they are okay and don't face similar fates as that of Cassy and Papa and Granny. I can't believe that I will have to say goodbye so soon...
