The pizza place shines alone in a dark street
On the wall they'd put up posters
For a band playing every night
Across the street for an anniversary
On the corner for a tribute
A few doors down for some bright young things
Posters peeling off to the side
So many dates to memorize
Then the wave came
Galloping over the levees it flooded the stage
My street is the new littoral
Each tide washes down the poster wall
One by one they sag and slough away
Dates pass by hours, then months
Dances that never were
The annivserary came and went
Thick silence over the invisible shore
The last few posters remain on the white wall
Yet to be drowned
Past nights swept away
And no new markers drawn up
We are all at sea.
