The New Tigris

Outside a closed takeaway on my street
A river has run a new course
Life unmade, then made again
On top of the old, the sole red lights
Left on, water supped sparingly
Then overflowing, gathered in the clouds
From the second floor, there with the energy
To burst the concrete bank, and add
Another river in the city of rivers
An urban Ganges, where a pigeon bathes
Bending like the Nile around
The tires of a black people carrier
The mystic headwaters for all to see
Our latter day Euphrates begins
Near the doorstep of a shut curry house
Give enough time, and as with daisies
And dandelions poking through black bin bags
Cardboard bleached by sunshine
Ablutions at the new founts
Of life seeping up through the stone
Ishtar now waits at my bus stop.
