Reece put the pencil down dramatically. "Do you want to grab food after this?"

A small smile played at my lips as I focused on my notebook paper. "Reece, focus on math," I said in a slightly warning tone.

He sighed and I could see him run his hand through his hair out of the corner of my eye.

He had been doing this a lot. He kept asking to hang out when school was not in session, and I kept politely rejecting him. He probably wasn't used to rejection, so this was something new for him.

When it came to my suspicions about him, I still felt eerie. But overall his questions concerned Dean, who was no longer a part of my life.

Speaking of the devil, Dean. He definitely went out of his way to avoid me now. In English, he went back to the seat he had at the beginning of the year. He didn't eat lunch with us anymore. Home Ec was the one class he'd constantly skip.

I was getting more worried day by day. I really didn't want to be paired up with a new group. I liked our old dynamic. I'd ask the questions and he'd answer with another one.

It was frustrating but it was our thing.

"You know, for being friends, you really don't like to hang out," he pouted.

"Oh, we're not really friends..." I started, but noticed the hurt expression on his face. "I just mean we don't know anything about each other."

"Yeah, because we don't hang out," he chuckled, reviewing my work done so far.

How was I supposed to tell him I wasn't looking for more friends?

Instead, I awkwardly laughed and grabbed my paper out of his hands. I began to copy the next textbook problem, under his scrutinizing gaze. "What?" I finally asked, meeting his eyes.

He smiled and shook his head. "You just look cute when you're focusing."

A light blush formed and I avoided his gaze. Did he seriously just call me cute?

When he was busy checking over my work, I pulled out my phone and sent a text to Dylan.

Me: SOS. Library. Please.

I felt a little bad for pulling him out of practice, especially because he'd pay for it later, but I needed an excuse to leave. Like, desperately.

Reece was a great tutor and an okay 'friend' but every time he got clingy like that it made my skin crawl. I had no idea why. He definitely wasn't ugly and lord knows I needed a catalyst in my love life but something about him unsettled me.

Almost five minutes later, Dylan ran inside. He frantically searched for me and I could sense the relief he felt when I was sitting perfectly fine.

"Dylan! Oh my gosh, what're you doing out of practice? Is everything okay?" I frantically asked, approaching him. I was hoping he'd take the hint and play along.

He furrowed his brows and I gestured back at Reece, trying to hint again. Realization dawned on him and he mimicked my worried face. "Yeah... it's your dad..." he awkwardly said as he thought of a scenario. "He... he fell down the stairs."

I gave him an incredulous look, glad my back was to Reece. That was the best excuse he could come up with?

"He's at the hospital..." he added after I didn't respond.

I gasped. "I have to see him." I turned to Reece with my best panicked face. "I'm so sorry, I have to go."

Reece frantically nodded. "Oh yeah, of course. Can I do anything?"
