Chapter Twenty Two

Caitlin’s POV

I never thought I’d be crawling through a ventilation system in a lab coat with experimental pills and a guy named Drake following right behind me to save my best friend Chase from his new animal side.

But then again, I don’t think anyone would really expect that.

There was a loud crash behind us, and Drake froze in front of me, before swearing under his breath and crawling faster. I decided I would let him take the lead a few feet back, cause, let’s face it; I have the direction of a dizzy blind monkey on drugs in a new territory.

Basically, if you drop me in the middle of a forest, I’m screwed.

I picked up my crawling speed when I heard another loud crash in the ventilation system behind us. My guess? They had found out where we had gone, and were trying to come after us, or flush us out like a virus in a human body.

Or, ya know, maybe they were releasing highly trained monkeys who had a blood thirst for Caitlin and Drake. Never could be too careful.

Drake stopped abruptly, and I blinked, raising an eyebrow curiously. I realized he had stopped where the vent had led into a room, and he made a fist pumping motion as though he had just won the lottery. He glanced over at me and scooted to the side, pointing at the vent.

I cocked my head at him before looking down, my mouth dropping open when I nearly sighed in relief. It led down to the entrance! Hells yeah, bitches, Caitlin isn’t about to be the next fried siren! Woot!

Several people rushed into the room below causing me to slump over and suppress a groan.

Spoke too soon, apparently.

Seriously?! How the fuck are they planning our every move?

I looked over at Drake to see that he was probably thinking the same thing as he scowled. He took a deep breath, glanced over at me and gestured to the vent.

My mouth dropped open and I shook my head frantically, but it was too late as he nodded once more and kicked the vent open, grabbing my hand and swooping down, causing me to yelp as we hit the floor, Drake instantly sprinting for the door, our hands clasped together.

The men behind us instantly started shouting, gesturing angrily towards us as they tried to keep up, but thanks to Drake, we had an advantage of confusion.

The doors swung shut furiously behind us, and Drake kept running which forced me to as well, since, well, it was either be dragged or run.

We were both out of breath by the time we had reached the car, and I hopped in so quickly I swore the rest of my body was just catching up as Drake started the car and pulled out, driving off so quickly I’m sure we broke a record.

My heart was pounding in my ears, and I forced myself to take a few deep calm breaths as I repeatedly glanced behind us to see if anyone was following.

“Shit, son,” Drake muttered, glancing behind us once as we sped down the street.

After a few more seconds of relaxed breathing, I glanced over at Drake.

“Do you think they’ll follow us?”

“Doubt it. I don’t even think they saw what vehicle we got in, let alone jot down much information. Hopefully they’ll only be able to tell a vague description to whatever police they call… Fuck, hopefully they’ll just drop it. The police can’t really catch us, anyways.”
