They came from far and wide to play
The performance of their lives.
The courage, passion, excitement shown,
Their ambition surely drives.
The stage was set, the flame was lit,
The nations humbly poised,
To witness something truly great
And doubters all destroyed.
The games began and medals came
In track & field, on road,
In pools, at sea, arenas, ranges,
All disciplines, they were bestowed.
The fish-like Phelps, and Murray's smash,
Rudisha's calm, and Bradley's go.
The punchy Adams, and haste of Trott,
The mighty Bolt, indomitable Mo.
With awesome Brownlees, and speeding Hoy,
Ainslie's greatness and inspiring Jess,
Pendleton's pedalling and many more,
All competing with such great finesse.
Too many heroes here to name,
None less worthy than the rest,
All united in their wish to be
Faster, stronger, higher, the best.
With hearts packed full of pride and joy,
At this glorious occasion,
Let us not forget the legacy,
To inspire a generation.
