CHAPTER 14: SCREW A

Toby opened his mouth to explain, but stopped himself when he remembered A's last message.
He was about to snap back at Ezra, when someone else interrupted.
"You lied," she stated, clearly hurt and angry.
Toby didn't even have to turn around before knowing that familiar, all too angry voice she had.
It was Spencer Hastings, the girl whom A threatened to hurt.

"I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU! What happened to London?" she demanded, ignoring Aria's light tugs from behind.
"I came back to visit," Toby tried to reply cooly, but his trembling voice gave him away.
"Spencer..." Aria tried again, this time lightly touching her shoulder. The girls had gone through a lot of crazy things, and if rational Spencer lost it, it was gonna be a whole lot messier.
"Well?" Spencer glared angrily at Toby.
"Can we talk alone?" he asked, eyeing the concerned exchange between Ezra and Aria.
Expecting a harsh no, he was surprised that Spencer reluctantly gave in, and the two left Ezra and Aria for their well needed privacy.

"What the hell, Toby! London with Jenna? Where is she, hiding behind the trash can?" Spencer hissed, as they walked out of the coffee cafe.
"She's still there." he mumbled, almost too quiet for Spencer.
"What do you mean she's still there? Then why are YOU here?" she fumed, clearly hurt. "Why did you lie?" she asked again, softening a little.
'Because I love you too much,' Toby wanted to say, but couldn't. A was definitely going to hurt Spencer, but he had no choice now, did he?
Instead, he looked straight into her brown eyes, confessing," I didn't go to London with them. Jenna had a scholarship to a music school there, but I didn't follow. I stayed, because of you..."
Trying hard not to stare into his deep, piercing eyes, Spencer couldn't help but see the hurt in them.
"Why?" she whispered, eyes filled with tears. All the nights sobbing about the boy who stood in front of her suddenly came to mind. That this boy was just another heartbreak.
"Because..." he started, taking a deep breath. It was dangerous, sure. But Spencer deserved to know about his... Threats.
"Someone messaged me. She, he, whatever it was, asked me to stay away. Or else you'd be hurt." he explained, stopping to glance back at Spencer, whose tears were already spilling out. Spencer Hastings never cried in public. And Toby knew that he was the reason why she was breaking down.
"A." she managed to get out, "Just like before."
"I'm sorry. I knew... That it would hurt. But I was never going to let go without a fight. So I stayed, making sure that Caleb and Ezra could help you." Toby sighed deeply, hugging Spencer tightly as she cried openly.
"You tried to get them to make me feel jealous. It didn't work. I wanted you back," Spencer realized, letting his comforting arms embrace her.
"I forgot how stubborn you are," he said simply, twirling a lock of her brown hair in his finger, making her blush, as she tried to frown at him.
