Chapter 15: The Nightmare

I woke up believing that this would be a day like any other, but I never thought that one of my worst nightmares would begin today. I'm not talking about petty nightmares like I got an F on an exam (which I didn't), or others that involve that I fell to the ground or something. When I mean that one of my worst nightmares began today, I mean something that anyone would agree with because it is something no one should go through. I never thought something like that would happen, especially here inside the campus.

Three weeks passed since the break in and I was in the middle of an endless dream when I heard my phone starting to ring in the middle of the night. I picked up my phone and when I saw that it was Alec, I immediately pressed the accept button and asked him what was up. He asked me gently if I could open the door and at that moment, I knew that he must have had another nightmare once again. When I opened the door, I saw Alec with his eyes bloodshot as if he had woken up with tears from his nightmare and I immediately embraced him on a tight hug.

"Hey, shhh, it's okay, Alec, you're okay" I mumbled soothingly and he pulled me even closer to him as he rested his chin on top of my head

"It's just hard, Tori" he muttered and we walked inside the dorm until we were sitting next to each other on the couch

"What happened this time?" I asked softly and he looked at me with a broken expression in his eccentric green eyes

"I relived everything once again as if I was 7 years old yesterday. I had woken up in the middle of the night because of the smell of something burning and then my parents suddenly came inside my room rushing for me to wake up quickly because the house had somehow caught in fire. Since it was a two-story house, there was no way to go through the window if I didn't want to be severely injured. They were dragging me down the stairs when everything started to get worst" he broke down as he said the last sentence and I wrapped my arms around him to let him know that I was there for him

"And-and when they finally took me outside the house, they ran inside because they needed to grab something very important, but they never got out. That's when your parents, who were with me outside, went inside to help but it was too late for Mum and Dad" he started to cry as he finished talking and I held him even tighter as he sobbed in his hands

"Why did they have to leave me so early, Tori, why?" He asked with desperation and I rested my head on his shoulder as tears already started to spill on my cheeks because it was as if I could feel his pain

"I don't know, Alec" I mumbled and he lifted my head from his shoulder before he pulled me on a tight hug

"It's just not fair" he whispered and I nodded in response

"I know it isn't, but know that since then you've been considered family" I said and I felt him kiss the top of my head

"And for that I'm grateful, but Tori, do you think it really was an accident?" He asked curiously

"Yeah, I think it was" I muttered and it was as if anger had taken over him quickly

"Then why do I feel as if it wasn't?!" He shouted and he let me go before walking towards the balcony. I stood there silent for a few moments before I stood up to walk towards where he had just gone

"Alec?" I called out softly as I opened the balcony door and he was just staring into empty space or the night sky surrounding us. I called him out again and he gave me a heartbreaking look before wrapping his arms around me since the weather was quite chilly tonight

"I'm sorry for snapping at you, I'm just very sensitive when it comes to this" he murmured and I looked up only to see him giving me a sad smile

"And I understand, Alec" I whispered and I looked up towards the night sky as he held me close to him
