My Girl

~Chapter Four~

One week later

The rest if the week was alright. Cora went to school while I went to work. Cora has made many friends at her preschool and was even invited to a birthday Saturday afternoon to stay until Sunday.

I told John I could work Saturday afternoon, he didn't argue since he said Martha called in for the weekend. He said she got sick with the flu, poor women.

Work has been good, I have gotten a hang of how the diner works. The tips aren't to bad, I am getting about 50 to 100 dollars a day. For me, I have done better because in Manhattan, people just threw down a hundred and leave. It wasn't like I was complaining. But here their a little frugal with money, just like everyone else should be.

"Cora! Are you ready to go to the birthday party?" I asked from the kitchen.

"Yeah! I don't know if I should wear my tutu or not!" she cried frustrated.

I stopped making my sandwich for work and ran to Cora's room. She sat on her bed with her pants and tutu in ether hand with tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Oh sweetheart," I said while bending in front of Cora and placing my hands on her small knees. "Are you alright?"

Cora shook her head as a whimper escaped her lips. My heart broke just seeing her like this.

"I can't figure out if I should wear my tutu or not," she said.

"Is that the real reason you're crying?" I asked softly.

She shook her head no and glanced at me with her beautiful blue eyes. They filled with tears as she hugged me hard.

"I am afraid they are going to be like the other kids. I don't want them to pick on me," she whispered into my hair.

"If they do, you call me and I will be right over. I promise," I assured as I rubbed her back with my hands.

She pulled away, whipping her tears off her cheeks. We decided on wearing the jeans and bringing the tutu in her overnight bag.

"Are you ready now?" I asked.

Cora nodded while smiling up at me. I went ahead and finished my sandwich for work.

"Alright let's go!" I said in an enthusiastic voice.

Cora giggled while putting her sleeping bag behind her back and her overnight bag on her shoulder. I carried my lunch and the young girls present for Cora since her hands were full with other things.

I used the invitation as a guide to get to the girls house. We found it easily because there were purple balloons attached to the mailbox.

Cora jumped in her car seat as we approached the house. I took Cora out of her seat and handed her her things before getting the present and going to the front door.

Cora reached up and rung the door bell and waited impatiently for someone to open it. A young women answered the door with a bright smile on her face. I returned the gesture as younger girls ran up to the door and pushed the women out of the way.

"Cora's here!" one girl shouted loudly.

Then everyone ran to the door. There were at least twelve girls at the front door praising Cora about what she was wearing and what nice things she had.

The women stepped forward once everyone had gone and I had said goodbye to Cora. I gave the present to the women and she said her thank you.

"What time do I need to pick her up tomorrow?" I asked while holding my hand out with a piece of paper, "If there are any problems just give me a call."
