Chapter 27

A couple days later, we find ourselves driving to the exact TV/Radio station that the Vinges are going to release the cue. That cue will kill thousands of people, if not more. We have to stop them before vampires disguised as humans attack the innocent people along the west coast.

It’s a deathly quiet silence as we drive there. We’re all geared up as much as possible. We all have on bulletproof vests from underneath our clothing. We’re all wearing black, even though it’s terribly hot outside. I have guns and knifes slinging across my waist, same with everyone else. We all have guns hidden in different spots; bras, socks, tucked into our waistlines and so on.

We can’t chance anything. I know how dangerously violent the Vinges can get. They’re the most violent vampires in the world. To be honest, they scare me. Vampires have always scared me. That’s why I do what I do for a living. To get rid of the things that fear me.

Quietly, I turn around to look at Piers in the backseat. He’s looking down into his lap, blonde messy hair falling around his face. “Hey, Piers?”

“Yeah?” He doesn’t look up.

“You gonna be alright?”

He looks up, staring at me. “Yeah. As long as I’m not the one that has to kill her.”

My heart almost stops there. If I ever had to kill Ace…I don’t even want to think about it. It must be so hard for him to go through what he’s going through. “Agreed.”

Ace shifts in his seat, glancing back at Piers. “Alright, buddy. Just try and stay away from her, okay?”

He nods, but he looks depressed. “Yeah. I know.”

Riker and Lexi are in the other car, so we have two getaways if something goes wrong. There’s so many things that could go wrong. We could all die. One wrong move and the savage vampires are released. So, so, so many things that stresses me out.

The car parks a couple miles away from the station. I can see it in view; it’s near the beach, but far enough away so that no body will suspect anything. It’s kind of in it’s own little remote area, where the regular, innocent humans won’t be able to hear gunshots and screams of agony.

I adjust my belt full of dangerous weapons and look to Ace. Piers already got out of the car, he’s casually leaning against it, watching the beach in the distance. He wanted to give us a moment. I silently thank him for that.

Ace is watching me like I’m going to leave him forever. “Look…I know this a really dangerous problem…but just in case neither of us make it out alive…I just wanted to say - ”

“We’re not going into war, Ace.”

He looks at me seriously. “Yes, we are. If we do not win, there will be a war. A big one, that will cost a ton of lives, including ours. We’ll be the first ones to go, Scarlett. So I need to tell you this, I need you to know this before we go out and risk our lives, just let me tell you this, okay?”
