Chapter 1 (Prologue)

It all started with a camera

A small little camera that stared at me from inside of my laptop

That little camera, no bigger than my finger changed my life forever

I could never see it coming, I recorded one video

Then another

Then another

Before I knew it I was getting comments, requests and 'I Love You's' from all over the world

They were viral videos

I had seen it happen to many people - Justin Bieber, Rebecca Black, Cody Simpson

But me, a girl from Sydney Australia, I would have never thought

Now I'm standing back stage about to go on for my first ever interview.

I'm in Hollywood

I've almost made it

Almost

"You're on in 5" said a man in all black, wearing a head piece and holding a clipboard that had my name printed on it

I nodded and let one the makeup women finish attaching a small black mic to the collar of my blue shirt

"Maddie, I need eyeliner!" she called as she undid the top button on my shirt, fluffed out my collar and rolled the sleeves of my shirt up to my elbows

"Here" said the second makeup woman, holding out a pencil of black eyeliner to the woman attending to my clothes

"Look up" she instructed as she took the pencil
I looked up towards the lights handing from the banisters in the black roof as she covered my eyes in thick black makeup before smudging it slightly and handing the pencil back to the second woman

"Look at me"

I blinked to keep the tears from my eyes and stared at her

She was young with long, straight, black hair, bangs touching the tips of her thick black eyelashes that framed bright green eyes also surrounded by thick navy blue eyeliner

She had tanned skin - one of the benefits of living in California I suppose - perfectly blended with a small layer of foundation and matte pink lips

"You alright sweetheart?" she asked grabbing her brush and sweeping a thin layer of bronzer over my cheeks before thumbing it in and away from my bottom eyelid

"Fine" I replied

"You're going to do fine, kids much younger than you have been on this show and the audience have loved them"

"They knew what they were doing though" I muttered as she knelt down to tug at the bottom of my ragged cut off denim shorts

"So will you" she smiled, brushing some powder on my neck "Once you get out there the lights will completely block the audience, just remember to smile, dance and answer the question the way your manager told you too"

I nodded again "Do I look alright?"

"Perfect"

I nodded and cracked my knuckles nervously

"Stop that" said my manager Evelyn walking over to me in her coco coloured pencil shirt, white blouse and black heels

Her long brunette hair fell nicely behind her shoulders and swayed slightly as she trotted towards me, chocolate brown eyes shining with nerves and excitement

"One last check" she smiled holding me at arm's length "Smile" - I flashed her, my teeth with a grin

"Laugh" - I chuckled nervously

"Say hello"

"Hey" I replied

She dropped her arms from my shoulders "Twirl"

I turned nervously on the toes of my cream coloured converse that had become my best friend through-out all of this.

On the tip of my shoe was a small smile I had drawn on with a sharpie on the plane ride over to California.

It helped to be wearing these in when I was in a room full of busy people who never smiled, which was a lot of the time

"You look great" she smiled at me

"You think?" I asked looking down at the blue button up shirt, denim shorts and cream converse they had thrown me into when I arrived this morning.

"Absolutely, you look casual, but not too casual, comfortable yet stylish, most importantly, you don't look like Hollywood's had too much affect on you yet, and you seem down to earth which is what people will take away from you"

"You can get that much out of clothes?"

"You can get a lot out of everything" she smiled "I would give you a kiss on the cheek for good luck but I don't want to smudge your makeup"

I nodded "Thank you for being here Ev"

"Anytime Love"

"On in 1"

Ev gave me a quick hug and pushed me towards the man with the clip board

"You walk out as soon as Ellen says her line okay?"

I nodded and cracked my knuckles again.

"Stop that!" Ev shouted behind me, but I could hardly hear her.

She was too far away now and I was watching the crowd.

The massive crowd that had come to see Ellen and got me as an added bonus.

In a matter of minutes almost all of the US would see me, I would become public property.

My breath caught in my throat as the man with the headset and clipboard spoke again.

"10 seconds"

Everything slowed down around me

Everything was so far away

"5"

I shook my head, blonde curls flailing around me

"4"

I took a deep breath and concentrated on my shoes

Smile I told myself Smile like your shoes are smiling at you

If people could see what's going on in my head right now they would think I was nuts

I focused on the voice of the man with the headset

"2"

"You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling" I muttered to myself, repeating the line from Inception "You mustn't be afraid"

He held one finger in front of my face and pushed me forward into the small corridor that lead to light, to the crowd, to the up roar

"My next guest is a 17 year old girl from Sydney Australia, who got her big break posting videos on YouTube from a dare by her best friend, what happened next was too incredible not to share with you, take a look at this"

I looked up at the screen as one of my video's started to play

I was back at my desk, singing along to an acoustic track of Maroon 5's 'She will be loved'

It faded out

I stopped, toes on the line of light, waiting for the line that would draw me out of the shadows and into the eyes of everyone

"Now she's working on a single, an album and has already met the likes of other YouTube sensations, Cody Simpson and Justin Bieber, please welcome the wonderful Asher Kye Roman!"

I stepped out to bright lights, loud cheers, clapping and Katy Perry's 'Part of me'

And I remembered to smile
