Chapter 13

Save The Earth. It’s The Only Planet With Chocolate

So to say the least, I was kind of freaking out.  I mean, who were these people?  Were they going to be like Edmund and kidnap me for information?  No, I didn’t want to go through that again.  I needed to tell the guys about it.

Needed to tell Max, was more like it.  Maybe he would know what to do.

I stepped back inside, closing the door behind me.  Ben and Drew were looking at me with worried expressions on their faces.  They must have known something was up.

“What happened?” Drew asked, standing up.

I shook my head.  “Do you guys remember those people from Lake Toplitz?  The one who was talking to the guy who’d rented us the boat and then the one taking pictures?”

They both nodded, realization appearing in their eyes.

“They’re apparently staying at this hotel also,” I said.  “They know we’re here because they looked up at me.”

“This is going to be just like that Edmund guy, isn’t it?” Ben asked, swallowing hard.  “We’re going to have to watch our back with them, right?”

I nodded.  They’d probably been watching our every move so far.  I mean, they’d gotten pictures of us.  But what I wanted to know was just what they wanted from us.

The treasure?  Well, they couldn’t have it.

“You’ve got to tell Max, even if he doesn’t want to talk to you right now,” Drew said.  “He’d want to know.  Maybe he’ll get out his current self centered world and comfort you since you’re obviously freaked.”

“Well, since the last guy who followed us kidnapped me for a week, I think he’ll have something to say about it.”

I was hoping he’d react the way I wanted him to.  I wanted him to stop being mad at me for whatever reason he was and protect me.  Call me the damsel in distress, I don’t care.  But if any other girl had a knight in shining armor – yes, pun intended – that looked and acted the way Max did, they would, too.  I was a smart, independent young woman, but I still wanted him to be there for me.

I stared at the bedroom door as I slowly walked toward it.

“Good luck,” Ben called before I opened it.

When I stepped inside and closed the door behind me, Max was stretched out on the bed watching a movie on the flat screen.  He had only on his pajama pants, tempting me to slip onto the bed beside him and cuddle up against his warm body.  I really wanted to do just that, but I was afraid of what reaction I’d get from him.

He didn’t even look up when I stopped at the side of the bed.  His eyes never left the flat screen.

That was never a good sign.

“Can I talk to you?” I asked quietly.

He didn’t even acknowledge me.

“Max?”

Still nothing.  That was definitely not a good sign.

So instead, I did what Brielle sometimes had to do when Dad was watching something and was so engrossed with whatever was on the screen.
