Chapter 4

My first week at Rydell wasn't so bad after Rhonda took me under her wing and introduced me to some of her friends. I wasn't entirely sure about them but at least I was starting to put a few names to faces. Of course Evelyn had settled right in, she wasn't at all phased being the new girl at all.

"Why don't you come to the Ice Palace with us after school today," Rhonda says as we're getting our stuff out of our lockers on Friday afternoon.

"Who's us?" 

"Me, Steph, and Sharon. Maybe some of the guys."

I don't know why I'm hesitating it's not like I have anything better to do. "Where is this Ice Palace? How would I get there?"

"In my car, silly," Rhonda laughs. "I'll drive us there, I always do." She rolls her eyes like it's a mute point. "Come on, don't you want to make some friends out of school." I guess she's right but I don't want a pity invite.

"Okay, so long as the others won't mind."

Rhonda looks at me, and shakes her head. "You need to lighten up, stop overthinking everything." She tries to bump her hip against mine which is kind of difficult since I'm at least four inches taller than she is.

"Anyone got a smoke?" Paulette asks looking around the table at the Ice Palace. She's an over bleached blonde who has clearly modelled her look on Marilyn Monroe. I'm not sure what to make of her yet but I'm inclining towards dislike.

"Here," Steph says thrusting a packet of cigarettes in her direction. "I'm trying to quit anyway."

"Cool," Paulette says taking the whole packet. "So have you all got dates for the dance-off?"

"Well obviously," Steph drawls flicking her blonde hair over her shoulder, and Paulette pulls a face.

"Yeah, of course, Johnny will be taking you." I detect a sign of jealousy but I can't say I blame her, Johnny is cute. "And I guess you're going with Goose?" She looks at Rhonda.

"Well someone has to." Rhonda laughs but I can tell she really likes him. They make a funny couple, he must be at least a foot taller than her, it'll be funny to see them dancing. "So who are you going with?"

Paulette shrugs. "I dunno, I turned down Josh and Alex. I don't wanna go with just anyone. What about you Sharon?"

"I'm going with Jacob Walker," she says sounding bored.

Rhonda's eyes widen. "What! Sharon, why are you going with him?"

Sharon looks away twirling her hair around her finger. "He asked me."

"Sharon, he's a jock," Steph says sounding disgusted.

"And what about Louis?" Rhonda demands. "He was gonna ask you." I had assumed Sharon and Louis were dating my first day here but it seems like they're just good friends.

"Well Louis hasn't asked me," Sharon snaps. "And I'm not gonna wait around for him and wind up with no date."

Rhonda looks exasperated, and I can't work out what the big deal is. "He was gonna ask you." 

Sharon shakes her head, her curls bouncing.

"Snooze, you lose," Steph laughs.

The bell over the door rings and Goose comes in with his friends following. Johnny makes a beeline for us and I look away as he kisses Steph. We move around the table to make room for them all to sit down. Louis and another guy Davey also join us. The minute Sharon and Paulette get up to go order some food, Rhonda rounds on Louis.
