I caught myself standing

at the edge of the pier.

My mind had been racing and wondering

for minutes that seemed like hours.

Each wave crashing onto shore

made me think of you;

the same waves that once took you away from me.

I remembered running

down from Captains Cove

and calling your name.

I know you heard me.

My arms were out stretched,

grasping for you.

That day I watched you forget me.

You boarded

at the end of the dock.

Without a look goodbye

you slumped the sack

of your belongings down.

And the boat set sail.

I felt my heart drip

through my body and onto the ground

that my knees had made friends with.

My hands clenched my chest

In a feeble attempt

To keep the rest of

my heart intact.

So dear when you

set sail again;

don’t expect me

to run from Captains Cove

and fall to pieces

on that dock.

I will turn

and walk away

This memory

with torn edges

will lead to my goodbye

I will forget you someday.

And when that day arrives

I will never again

Stand apon this dock

Wishing it was you and I;

not by myself with my shadow to get me by.
