There's a tiny world inside every person. Depending what world you're from, you look up to someone.
Those of a religion following a single god, deity or icon are from the world of the first person to exist, alone and on no world, so they turn to the person as a god.
Those of a religion following multiple gods are from a world inside a person who lives in a world populated with multiple people. These are their creators; their idols, gods, etc.
Atheists are those who have had the epiphany; who own the knowledge that they are nothing but slaves supplying energy to their creator, with no purpose but to serve those above. They do not know they harbor their own tiny universe, who worship and follow them as their own gods.
