Love's Melody

When you put a bunch of 14-year-olds together in one room, give them 50 minutes, ask them to write an unconventional love poem, apparently the result would turn out to be something like the poem below. Dedicated to my assumed-to-be-gay friend Do Khoi, since the poor dude seems so lonely and his result of this assignment is somehow even more bold than mine. The teacher had a terrified look on her face after reading my wonderful creation, I'm still wondering why though, it's not that bad, is it? You tell me.

Love is like a melody

Notes flying through your ears,

It either stays in your heart

Or roll along with the tears.

It can be deep and passionate,

Like the heat of the planet's core;

Or shallow and cheap,

Like drugs, cigarettes and whores.

When the melody is strung,

It dances and clings into one's head,

Whether you like it or not,

It's not something one can easily shed.

It can be bright and cheerful

Like blossoms bloom in May;

Melodious and carefree,

When nothing seems astray.

But forever it can't last,

The lute can't always stay tuned;

The notes will wear out and die,

Like sunset on an afternoon.
