Chapter 4

Ignoring my bleeding hand, I turned to the Raikage. "I don't mean to put you on the spot," I said, "but Madara has sent traitors from Konohagakure after all of us."

Without waiting for his answer, I hopped over to Tsunade. Shocked by a direct attack on the Raikage, everyone had gathered together, tense and ready for battle. This wasn't normal. There were few times in history when anybody had tried to kill a Kage – much less five Kages and their bodyguards.

"Who is our enemy?" Gaara demanded.

"These must be Root members," I said. "Root was an organization headed by an Elder of Konoha, but it was supposed to have been disbanded long ago. Clearly, it wasn't, and now we don't have a choice but to fight. We don't know what his motives are, but he is an enemy."

Gaara asked no questions, but the Mizukage and Raikage looked astonished. Even the Tsuchikage was a little disturbed. "So you mean to tell me that this is an attack orchestrated by someone within Konohagakure?" The Mizukage's eyes narrowed at me. "How are we supposed to react?"

They were behind us. Before I could think too hard about it, Amaterasu was helping me, and golden chakra stretched out to the three Root members who'd been trying to attack from the back. Remembering something I had seen in Itachi's memories, I pulled. I was pulling the chakra out of them, just like how the Akatsuki had extracted the Tailed Beasts' chakra for their personal use.

They were pulling back, of course; it was like tug-of-war, and it was three-on-one. But Amaterasu and I pulled as hard as we possibly could. If we lost, Amaterasu's chakra could eventually be pulled out, which would be very bad. Then again, if we let them...

'Too risky,' said Amaterasu, although she understood what I was thinking about. 'It would take too long, and there's always the risk of someone interrupting it and leaving them with that amount of chakra.'

'Agreed.'

"Kira-sensei, we're fighting these people, right?" Naruto called, and I nodded to him, barely holding on to the three sets of chakra I was pulling on. Naruto, seeing my dilemma, ran up to one of the Root members and attacked. Despite having his chakra pulled out, the masked man dodged the attack and returned with one of his own.

Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi sprang into action next, followed by Temari and Kankuro. All I had to do was keep pulling, because then they would have to concentrate on tug-of-war as well as battling some of the strongest shinobi around.

If Sasuke had been on the other side, that would've been a huge problem. It would probably have taken most of the Konoha shinobi to disarm him, unfortunately, and then we would've had to deal with all of these people as well. Madara was a pain.

Seeing that one of the shinobi had been distracted by Sasuke's quick attack, I pulled as hard as I could. His body went limp, and I froze. I hadn't thought he'd give in so easily. I'd killed him.

'You're the only one who can control my chakra like this,' Amaterasu said. 'Don't feel remorse. See it as a step toward protecting your loved ones.'

'I'm killing people without even touching them.'

'It's a war. You said so yourself. There's no time to deal with technicalities during war, Kira. Just do what you have to do, for the greater good.'
