Chapter 18:

Justin’s POV:

The entire car ride to the hospital my mom and I both were quiet. My body felt limp—lifeless, like my soul had been ripped out of my body.

“They were in a car accident” replayed in my head over and over again. My mom didn’t tell me any details about the accident, even after I had gotten dressed in a pair of sweats and a shirt.

“When we get to the hospital the doctors will explain everything,” was all she said to me.

Questions took over my mind. How bad was the crash? Did Selena or Kaylie get injured? Did Selena or Kaylie—die?

Just hearing the word die in my mind made me cringe.

No—neither Selena nor Kaylie can be dead; they just can’t. There are things Kaylie and I still need to do as father and daughter—even if Selena does plan on keeping Kaylie away from me.

And I never got to tell Selena—I am still in love with her.

I didn’t even realize I started crying until I felt something wet running down my cheek. I quickly wiped away the tears before my mom noticed, but it didn’t help because I started sobbing.

My mom didn’t say any words; she just patted my back letting me sob.

And all I could do was blame myself.

If it wasn’t for me yelling at Kaylie—she wouldn’t have had to call Selena, then Selena wouldn’t have needed to come get her, resulting in our argument ending in a car accident.

It seemed like the car ride took hours to the hospital—but only 15 minutes passed.

My mom and I got out of the car, and my body spoke before my mind. Before I knew it I was at the reception desk asking for Selena and Kaylie Gomez.

I was asking in tears, and the doctors tried their best to calm me down but all I could remember saying was ‘that’s my daughter and ex’.

I felt my mom’s gentle touch on my back again, my muscles un-tensing to her calm touch, and we were being escorted to the private waiting room where her parents, Gracie, Jazzy, Ryan and Demi all were waiting.

The room looked cozy—with a big flat screen hoisted on the wall, a mini fridge with water and soda, and it’s own ‘snack bar’ filled with fruits and variety of candy bars and granola bars.

There was a big long couch that sat adjacent from the wall with the tv and four chairs nearest to the door, two on each side of a little table that sat in between, and there was a mini couch that sat opposite of the wall where the four chairs were.

Everyone was silent. Selena’s parent’s, with Gracie were cuddled on the big couch, Ryan and Demi were on the mini couch with Jazzy all sobbing quietly.

This is my entire fault. Dammit Justin why did you have to cause an argument?

We all sat there in silence, the only words that could be heard were mumbling from chatting doctors, and on occasion Mandy or Brian whispering to Gracie that Selena and Kaylie were going to be alright.
