I sat next to Angel, holding her hand. Every once and a while I would give it a light squeeze, letting her know I would stay here for however long she needed me. She looked over at me and smiled weakly. "I'll stay here," I said.

"Thank you," she whispered back, then leaned her head against the pillows and sighed. It's been a year to the day -minute, possibly- of her attack, and two years since her sister's almost fatal attack. It seemed like a curse of mine, to be sitting in this hotel on this day three years in a row. Is it my misfortune, or merely coincidence?

As the nurse came in, Angel raised her head and opened her eyes. I sat up a little straighter, knowing that the news we were going to recieve might be anything but good.

"What's wrong?" I asked, inhaling the young nurse's heady purfume.

"Your wife is pregnant," she said, grinning widely.

"I see two things wrong with that statement," Angel said. "First, I'm not his wife. Second, I can't be pregnant. I'm still a virgin."
