I awoke suddenly in the night to a loud crash in my backyard. I glanced at my clock, the small green numbers illuminating the room eerily. They informed me that it was far too early to be awake on a Tuesday morning.

There was the crashing noise again. I got up and stumbled sleepily over to my window, peering out into the blackness of the night (or morning?). As my eyes adjusted to the dark, I saw nothing out of the ordinary. I was about to head back to bed when the shadows blurred across the grass, pulling up turf behind them. Another crash as they disappeared seemingly into thin air.

Okay, I'd had enough of this. I marched downstairs and out of the back door. The night was, yet again, silent. It was an untrustworthy silence, like the something was hiding, holding it's breath, waiting for me to leave. I stayed put.

"Alright, who's there?!" I yelled. No reply. Suddenly the gate I hadn't noticed was open slammed shut with so much force that it came off its hinges, and awkwardly leaned on the fence.

I held my breath, terrified. There was that silence again. I stepped off the porch, onto the cool grass, damp with condensation under my bare feet. I shivered, suddenly realising how freezing it was. An owl hooted somewhere off in the forest, making me jump slightly, which was silly. It was just an owl.

I heard a distant crash from the forest. It could have been an animal, but I wasn't so sure. I needed to find out just what was going on here. I went back inside, pulled some jeans and a coat on over my thin t-shirt, put a pair of sneakers on a went back out of the door. I crossed the yard and kicking the broken gate to one side, made my way up the dirt trail into the dark woods where I'd last heard the noise.

It had seemed like a good idea at the time.

But an hour later, according to my phone, I wasn't so sure. I was cold, tired and I had somehow veered off the path, so I had no clue where I was. I had tried to find it again several times, only resulting in me losing myself even deeper into the woods. This was a fucking stupid idea. I then recalled what Zayden had said earlier.

Don't go into the woods alone.

That only made me even more determined to find these shadow creatures. At least, that's what I had started calling them in my head. I had no idea what they were, and they kind of scared me. I heard a stick begin to pop under my foot. I stopped. I waited. There was nothing but the sound of my own breathing. I breathed a sigh of relief, worried that I should be as quiet as I possibly could. I slowly lifted my foot off the twig and onto the ground next to it. I carried on through the forest.

"I thought I told you not to come here."

I jumped out of my skin at the voice. I gritted my teeth and turned slowly. "Yeah, well, I said you can't control me or my actions."

He walked up to me until we were about five feet apart. He glared ferociously at me in a way that was slightly intimidating. I stood my ground.

"Seriously. Why did you come here? To prove a point?"

"The sha--" I nearly said, but stopped just in time. I would sound crazy.

"What?"

"Nothing."
