Chapter 23: Naming

The blades of the windmill turned. A sunny spot became shady and then, was sunny again. A little girl with brown hair and gray eyes sat in the sunny spot. She squealed everytime the blade turned the her sunny spot into shade. Her father, a gardener, smiled at the child. But his joy was short lived. A look at her eyes and he is reminded again, of the curse.

It was a very long time ago since he last wore the silver-lined black uniform of the Exorcists. Both Leah and him were Special Exorcists. His Innocence was capable of duplicating other Innocences. That made it special. Leah's on the other hand, was downright mysterious. Both of them had no idea how such their Innocences could have existed.

To the London people, the Walkers are a wealthy distinguished old family. They were charitable as well. Leah Walker, the direct heir of the Walkers, however, was pale and sickly. It was noticed by the generations of butlers, that there was always a sickly Walker in the family. They called it a curse, and they were nearly right about it. Unbeknowst to them, the Walkers are also known in the Black Order, as the longest line of Exorcists.

The sickly Walkers inherited the Walker Innocence, known as the 'Assembly of Souls'. They were usually the eldest of their generation. The second Walker of the generation will be an Equipment Type Exorcist and the third would be a Parasite Type Exorcist.

Leah inherited the 'Assembly of Souls'. Destroyed Innocence or Innocence of dead Accommodators turn into Dandelion seeds. These Dandelion seeds are invisible and will only become tangible, or visible when in a meter radius of the Inheritor of the Assembly of Souls. The inheritors experience a scorching heat, or stabbing pain as the Dandelion seeds plant themselves. Then, a feather quill appears and tattooes the names of the Accomodators on the Inheritor's back.

As Exorcists die and Innocence gets destroyed frequently, Leah is often tired from the back-burning experiences. Thus, she is often sickly. Snow White's father took the risk to marry her, hoping that the inheritance will not continue. When Snow White was born, she had gray eyes, a sign that she will inherit and continue the family curse.

Snow White's father sighed at his destiny and looks to the road. His cousin-in-law was dying on the road.

'Stay there, Astonia!' He tells Snow White. She obediently sits on the grass, but stretches her neckto see what was happening.  Snow White's father runs down the hill. Their voices were barely audible, but Snow White remembered very clearly the last sentence the dying man heard from her father.

'I will protect your memory, no matter how long it takes.'

The dying man smiled, and slumped in her father's arms. Her father shook the man frantically. She remembered her father calling his name, but she does not remember the name in the future. A round-bellied man with an umbrella floated near them and he cradled the dead man. He had blood on his hand.

'I think the round belly man killed uncle.' Snow White whispers to the dandelions in the grass. The dandelions shone, and an excited Snow White runs back into the family house. She pounded up the stairs and dashed straight into a room. Snow White jumped on the four poster bed and greeted her mother, Leah.

'Good morning Mother.' She giggles and rolls around the bed.

'Good morning Ste- - - -' Leah replies, flipping through an old copy of the Bible. She placed it down beside her.

'Mother, why do you call me by that name, and Father calls me Astonia?' Snow White asks her mother. Leah smiled, remembering an event long ago.

'When your father proposed to me, he hid the ring in a garland of dandelions. He placed the garland on my head and I felt like a princess being crowned. Your father pulled the ring from the garland and knelt down. That's what your name means, crown or garland.' Leah explained.

Just then, a dandelion seed floats into the room. Leah braced herself for the worst. It was going to plant into her.

But, something strange happened.

The dandelion seed split into half.

One half planted itself into Leah, as she had expected, but the other, floated towards her daughter. Snow White giggled at the circling half dandelion seed. It drilled into her back, and she cried instantly at the shock.

'Mother, it is painful! What is it?' Snow White asked. She tried to look at her back and see what it was. Leah ripped Snow White's dress from the back and stared with horror. The word 'Walker' was tattooed on her right shoulder. Leah slumped back to her bed and cried bitterly.

'GET OUT! GET OUT!' Leah cried, she shoved Snow White off the bed and pushed her out of her room.

'Madam Leah!' One of the head maids came rushing at her. She gestured for the other maids to take a traumatized Snow White away as she calmed Leah down.

'Hush, Leah, it's alright. Don't frigthen Astonia.' She tried calming a tearing Leah. Leah slapped the head maid across the face.

'Her name's Ste- - - - !!' Leah shouted hysterically, 'She's a Walker, Meesta, she's a Walker!'

Meesta forcefully dragged Leah back on bed. 'You will die if you continue this tantrum! Your body's too frail to take all this tension! Carrying the souls of other Exorcists too!'

'What's going on?' Snow White's father asks as he enters the room.

Meesta looked gravely at him. 'Master, Astonia will inherit the Assembly of Souls soon.' She looks on the sobbing Leah, who from the corner of her tattooed back, was the name 'Nea'. As Leah sobbed more, she coughed blood on the silk pillow.

'Astonia will inherit the Assembly of Souls very soon.'

Snow White forgot this incident until it was too late.
