~*Preston*~

Yawning quietly, I walk down a strangely familiar hallway. I woke up not long ago, and didn't want to disturb Rob as he slept, so I decided to take a walk around the building. I'm not doing anything bad, right?

As I walk, people stop what their doing to smile and nod at me. I don't know why, but they do. I'm as cool as M'ayris, and I doubt I'll ever be. Heck, she took on Anaihee without even pausing to think that Anaihee's execution abilities were...

I freeze mid-step. Wait... her abilities were at their strongest when M'ayris jumped in to save Rob. That means... Taking a deep breath, I rest my head against a wall. M'ayris is dead...

+Flashback+

"Frags is it?" I look up to see a small girl walk over and hold her hand out to me. She's probably a lower class men. But the real question is, how does she know my name?

"Y-yeah. How do you know my name? You're not in my age group." I take her hand and she surprisingly pulls me to a stand.

"I'm the same age as you idiot," the girl snaps at me, "My name is M'ayris." Wait, she's M'ayris?! The prodigy from the island colony? I thought she was taller...

"Oh." I instantly feel stupid. "Right."

"I heard you've been having some trouble with some of the other kids. I don't need to know why, or how, but I'm going to help you for now on." What?

"Why?"

"Because I can," she says plainly, "And you can't protect yourself."

"I can too!"

"Sure you can."

"I'm probably older than you."

"That's an odd change of topic. But, if you want to go there, fine. My 8th birthday is tomorrow," she crosses where arms. "When is yours?" I look at her in awe.

"It's in two months," I mumble, kicking the ground. How is she older than me too?!

"Right. So back to the original topic, if you need any help just call. I'll be right over." She turns to walk away.

"Wait! My friend Mi'kai's birthday is tomorrow too!"  M'ayris looks back at me with a smile.

"I know. He's my twin brother."

"What? How?! He's so tall, and you're, not."

"Mutated genes." M'ayris shrugs before walking away. Ending the conversation there.

+Reality+

I'm fighting back tears by the time my flashback is over. Why did you have to die M'ayris? You deserve to live so much longer than you did. If every selfless act she has done gave her an extra year in her lifetime, she would have been immortal...

I wish that was the case.

"Preston?" Mat's voice comes from nearby. "What are you doing over here?"

"Juniper is dead, isn't she?" I ask bluntly, not looking over at him.

"Y-yes. How did you find out?"

"Intuition," I mumble, taking a deep breath and closing my eyes.

"I'm sorry you had to find out on your own." Mat was always genuine when it came to sympathy. He's always been that way. M'ayris on the other hand was really awkward when it came to that. I smile slightly to myself at that thought, remembering all the times she would attempt at comforting Rob and I in the past. There was silence between us for a few moments before the sound of someone walking up broke it. I look up from my position against the wall to see Rob walking over, looking a lot different from what I remember.

He was wearing the light grey military attire of the empire, and the black sash he got at graduation. There was an orange cape around his shoulders, and his hair looked a little wet. Probably took a shower.

"Looking good Rob," I say with a small smile as he stops beside Mat and I. He flashes a small smile back to be before looking at Mat.

"You need to get ready." Mat nods and says goodbye before walking away, leaving Rob and I alone.

"I can't believe M'ayris is dead," I murmur softly in Mespelí, leaning against the wall once more.

"I know," he responds, shaking his head. Wait. Since when did he remember how to speak Mespelí?

"Since when did you remember how to speak this?" I ask with a smirk, looking back at him.

"After you saved my life of course. The majority of my memory from back in the day returned."

"Of course you gain all your memory before me." I huff jokingly and cross my arms.

"Not all of it," He says with a small sigh,"I don't remember anything earlier than 7. But I do remember two men. One was a tall blonde guy, and the other was short and tan."

"You sure it isn't Vikke and Lach?" I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at him.

"Positive. I was tiny, and they were full grown adults. Most likely they were my grandparents or something along those lines." He shakes his head. "Besides, that wouldn't be likely. Even you are older than those two."

"Really? I could have sworn that Vikke was at least your age, maybe older."

"It's true." Rob shrugs and leans against the wall beside me. "Also, I think you should get changed."

"What do you mean?" I look at him in confusion.

"In your room there is a set of your old military attire. You're going to need to wear that for the event later today."

"What's going on later today?"

"You'll see." Rob smiles before pulling me away from the wall and pointing toward the way he came from. "Now go change."

"Fine." I huff playfully and walk away from him. What does he have planned?
