Chapter Eight ~ Bi-effing Curious

Walking out of the local donut shop, I was beginning to feel good about myself. I could totally pull this off. As long as I made each member of The Samuels happy, then they’d never suspect me. It was that simple.

That was, of course, if my humanity didn’t get in my way first. Dad always said that was my weakest aspect. I began to feel sympathetic for the people we were robbing, even though Dad insisted that they would never know it was gone. Even then, I still feel sorry for them.

I had grown fond of walking on foot, now. It allowed me to watch everyone else, and I liked to observe. Especially since I was nowhere close to having real human interactions, it was nice to watch others do so.

A familiar brown-skinned beauty caught my eye. Melanie was walking down the sidewalk towards me, with her hand interlaced with Joe’s. She seemed to be happy to be with him but didn’t seem too thrilled. I knew something was wrong, instantly.

“Melanie!” I called out before I could stop myself.

Her eyes darted to mine and a small smile stretched across her lips. “Hey, Damien!” She turned towards Joe and planted a kiss on his cheek. They said their goodbyes before she ran over to my side. “Hey!”

I flashed her a friendly smile. "You look good today.”

"Thanks."

She swung her arm around my neck and rested her head against my shoulder. “So, aren’t you supposed to be babysitting?”

“Not on weekends,” I informed her, beginning to walk in the other direction.

“We should grab a bite to eat.”

I gestured towards the white paper bag in my hands.

“You don’t really want a donut, do you?” She snatched the bag away from me and wiggled her brows as she glanced up at me.

“Yeah, I do,” I said, “that’s why I bought it.”

Her wide smile turned into a frown. “It’s a beautiful day, Damien. Let’s go to the beach.”

“And do what? Play volleyball again?”

She snickered. “No, we can just talk. You have tons of stuff to tell me anyway.”

“Like?”

Melanie reached into my donut bag and pulled out the sprinkled donut I bought for Dad. She eyed it cautiously before taking a bite. “We’ll find out once we get there,” she said while chewing.

I sighed, knowing there was no way I was going to get out of this.

Somehow, Melanie had convinced me into going to the beach with her. It seemed like everyone here lived for the beach. Melanie had kept spare bikinis in her car just in case she stopped by the beach after doing her daily errands. She picked a spot on the beach that was in the midst of the afternoon rush. She claimed that it was the perfect spot to watch everyone’s business.

“You see her?” Melanie pointed to a blonde female who passed by our spot on the beach. “She’s such a slut. I guarantee you that she’s fucked every guy in Clearbourough.”

“Except me,” I said quickly.

Melanie let out a short laugh as she laid back on her beach towel. Her shades hung low on the bridge of her nose as she stared blankly at the afternoon sky. “I bet you’re hot.”

“Excuse me?” I asked her, shooting her a quick glare.

She sat up straight, “You and those damn sweater vests. It’s ninety degrees, why are you wearing that?”

“This is what I wear.”

“Obviously,” she snorted. “So, do you like Sam?”

“What?”

“’Cause she likes you.”

“I--” I couldn’t help the smile fighting its way onto my face. “I’m flattered.”

“You should totally ask her--” Melanie’s words were cut off when an unknown object came flying our way. It missed her by a few centimeters but ended up launched in my stomach, knocking me over. After the pain subsided, I noticed the object was a football.

“Jerk!” I heard Melanie yell at a man who was jogging over to us. “Watch where you throw, you meathead.”

The boy smirked. “I’m sorry, Mel.” His gaze settled on mine and it was then I realized, it was Levi. “I’m sorry about that, Damien.”

Sitting up, I shot him a glare. Angry, I tossed him the football and frowned. The last person I needed to see was him. Of course, he’d be shirtless.

“You got a little…” He scoffed before he knelt down in front of me and began to run his fingers through my hair. He moved slowly at first as his hazel eyes stared into mine. And for a second there, I swear my gaze flickered down to his lips. “All done,” he said, snapping me out of my thoughts and standing to his feet.

I stared up at him in awe.

He obviously sensed how uncomfortable he made me because he smiled knowingly. As he jogged away, I took a quick glance at Melanie who was just as shocked.

“What was that?” she questioned me.

I shrugged.

“No.” She shook me roughly. “Don’t shrug. I saw the way you looked at him, Damien. I could practically smell your desire for him.”

“Melanie!” I shouted. “I am not a homosexual.”

“Then you're a bisexual?”

“No!” I yelled even louder.

“Asexual?”

“Melanie!”

She broke out into laughter. “I know what I saw, Damien. You’re no different than the other boys that Levi got to. You might as well be bi-effing-curious.”

I didn’t respond. Instead, I focused on Levi’s figure out in the distance. Now that I truly thought about it, Melanie was right.
