Chapter Five ~ The Ends Justify The Means

“Damien, come play volleyball with us!” Melanie’s voice rang through my ears. She was dressed in a hot pink bikini, showing off her long mocha legs and even exposing some of her butt.

I had just been strolling through the beach after the whole fiasco that occurred at the donut shop with Levi. Little did I know that the reason Levi was following me was because he was romantically interested in me. Just my luck.

“Damien!” Melanie called once more. She waved her hands frantically in the air. “Come here!”

I looked around hastily, trying to think of an excuse not to play. I knew I probably shouldn’t have decided to come to the beach in the first place. But I did, only because I wanted to feel like I was apart of something for once and not just stealing other people’s valuables.

Melanie shook her head. She turned to the rest of the group on her side of the net and began speaking to them. Before I knew it, she was rushing over to me and pulling me along with her.

“No,” I protested, shaking my head. “I don’t know how to play,”

“Easy.” She smiled softly, continuing to tug me along. “Hit the ball over the net and that’s about it.”

       “But--”

“But socialize more!” She practically shouted. “It’s just volleyball, Damien.” By the time she was finished convincing me, she had already pulled me into the game. A couple of other people greeted me, including Joe, Melanie’s boyfriend.

The game resumed. A tall pale guy from the other team threw the volleyball into the air. He arched his back as he raised his right arm up and his left hand pulled back behind his ear. He pushed his left arm forward and struck the ball with the palm of his hand. The ball came flying over the net. I bent my knees and covered my head with my hands as I saw the ball approaching me.

A girl behind me hit the ball upwards, sending it over to Melanie. She pushed the ball up with her finger pads and sent it towards me. I shot her a glance that said 'are you kidding me'

“Hit it!” she yelled at me.

In a rush, I used both my hands to push the ball away from my face, causing it to collapse into the sand before me. I turned to Melanie angrily. “I told you!”

She broke out into laughter as she flung her arms around my neck. “You’re adorable, Damien.”

      “Great.”

She giggled, wrapping her arms tighter around me. “Don’t you beat yourself up over it. It’s only a game.”

I froze as I realized that she was hugging me. I had never had such an interaction with someone like this before. Reluctantly, I wrapped my arms around her waist, allowing myself to feel the love.

She pulled away from the friendly hug and smiled a toothy grin. “Come--” She snaked her hand around mine, “--let’s go for a walk.”

       “I really have to go-”

“Where do you have to go?” she questioned, “You always have to go somewhere.”
