A Fight without Remorse

Chapter 15

After her meeting with Carla Carrington finally ended, Alexis drove straight home to share the great news with Marcus. Not only had Ms. Carrington agreed to hold her event at their hotel, she’d also been quite enthusiastic about Alex's proposals. A happy client translated into large profits. A company as prestigious as Carrington Fashion House would only lead to great things for the hotel.

Alexis couldn’t have hoped for a better outcome. A feeling of relief and relaxation washed over her. After the adrenaline rush began to wane, she pulled into the underground garage and parked her car. She'd been edgy since learning of Carla Carrington's interest in what HEHG had to offer. It felt good to finally unwind now that the deal was official.

She cut the engine of her black SUV and stepped out of the vehicle, careful not to slam the door. Alex recently purchased the customized car. Tinted windows and shatterproof glass were ordered to protect herself from whomever placed a bull’s-eye on her forehead. Marcus helped her choose the right model and the safest option. Since that dreadful night in Central Park, no one had bothered her.

The police still hadn't caught the miscreant. They suspected a conspiracy against Alex because of her stature in the community. The FBI had taken control of the investigation. The NYPD agreed to turn over their evidence due to the significant nature of the crime.

They FBI was keeping the evidence tight to the vest. She knew they'd found something and were currently trying to track down some leads. Jade had a source inside the bureau and had been able to elicit some details of the investigation. Unfortunately, nothing of value had been uncovered yet.

She nervously tapped her foot against the carpeted floor of the elevator as she waited for her floor to arrive. Given Marcus' insistence, she agreed that she should stay at his house until the investigation was over and the criminals were behind bars. Despite looking at some suitable places, she hadn't found anything worthwhile.

When Marcus found out she considered moving out, despite the fact that the perpetrator was still on the loose, he freaked out. Together, they reached a compromise, she would remain at his loft until the police apprehended and brought the suspect to trial.

“I’m home,” she called out once she stepped inside the apartment. Alex kicked off her lilac pumps and hung her coat on the peg. Her nostrils suddenly aware of the delicious aroma of freshly cooked food. Marcus seemed to enjoy cooking. Often, he made her home cooked meals. It was becoming a habit for him, one she enjoyed immensely.

He had been pampering her ever since the night she was attacked, not that she minded. Marcus seemed genuinely interested in her personal life. He'd gone out of his way to be extra sweet to her. Something about him, his behavior had changed – she was still trying to figure out what exactly it was.

As she walked into the kitchen her olfactory senses were bombarded with luscious flavors. Her eyes nearly popped out of her head ogling a bare chested Marcus. She sighed in satisfaction as she watched him work with precision. His concentration so locked on the task at hand, he hadn't even noticed her presence. Soft notes of classical music echoed in the background, filling the room with a serene ambiance.

It was a sight she’d never grow tired of. Marcus moved through the kitchen like he had been doing it for years. His brow frowned in concentration and his bulging biceps, quite the swoon worthy sight, sighed Alexis. He picked up a spoon and tasted the sauce. The tip of his tongue peeked out to taste his delicacy. Unable to turn away, Alexis fixated on the view. A soft moan escaped her lips as she watched, completely enraptured with him.
