“Hey Sweetie.” My dad welcomed as I opened the door.

“Hey.” I mumbled in reply.

He cocked his head at me, “What’s the matter?”

Everything. Shayne hated me now and there was nothing I could do to fix it. I wanted to go back in time and never go to that party, never meet Shayne, and never feel this hurt. But I wasn’t going to tell my dad what happened. I would be in all kinds of trouble.

“It’s just been a long day.”

“I know how you feel.” He said kissing my forehead.

My mom yelled from the kitchen.

“Duty calls.” I smiled as I made my way over to the kitchen door.

The smell of lasagna filled the air and my mom stood by the counter tossing the salad.

“How was the sleepover?”

I frowned, “What sleepover?”

My mom turned away from the salad, “The one at Lindsay’s house.”

“Oh yeah! Um, it was fun. We watched a lot of chick flicks and stuff.”

She gave a curious look before continuing with dinner. Crap, that was close! I needed to get Shayne out of my mind so I could think straight.

“Do you mind setting the table?”

“Sure.” I grabbed three plates, three bowls, and silverware from the cabinets and placed them neatly on the table.

A pan of lasagna, salad, and glasses filled with milk were added by my mom shortly after.

“Dad! Dinner’s ready!” I yelled.

He came in with a frown, “My team is playing like shit today. They should have substituted number 14 for-“

“We don’t care Hal.” My mom said bluntly.

I laughed and took a seat across from her.

“How was school honey?” My dad smiled.

I swallowed a huge scoop of lasagna before speaking, “It was fine. Ms. Morris got hurt skiing last weekend so we have a new teacher now.”

My mom rolled her eyes,“Well someone that big shouldn’t have been skiing if you ask me.”

“Mom!” I scolded.

“What? It’s the truth.”

“What’s your new teacher’s name?” My dad asked.

“Uhh…I think it was Mr. Wilson.” I said, acting uninterested.

My mom wagged her eyebrows, “Oh. Mr. Wilson. When’s the next back-to-school night?”

“Gross mom!”

“I was just kidding!...Kind of.”

My dad sighed and pointed his fork at my mom, “See what I’ve had to deal with.”

“You know you like it.” My mom purred.

I dropped my fork, “Ok! Kid in the room!”

My parents just laughed and I poked my food. I really didn’t want to go to school tomorrow. More specifically, I wasn’t ready to face Shayne.
