What if?
What if that's him? What am I saying? Of course it's him. What if Sophie wakes up? What if that isn't so bad? What am I saying?! What if I'm going insane? Of course that would be terrible!

I enter the living room to find Peeta sitting down with Haymitch and Effie. When I enter the room they all look up as if they expect me to say something. But I don't. Peeta does instead

"Hey"

"Hi"

I reply simply. After a bit of watching TV we eat dinner. I was highly impressed by Haymitch and Effie's cooking. The meal was magnificent and very enjoyable one Effie pulled out Christmas crackers. At first she had to explain what they were but then once everyone understood it became fun with joke telling and paper hats. Once that is done we all go into the living room and watch a comedy as we allow our stomachs to settle before dessert. In this matter of time I sneak away upstairs to check on Sophie who is amazingly still fast asleep. When I get back downstairs Effie begins to give out plates of dessert. It's a small chocolate pudding with melted sauce on top surrounded by chocolate shavings. I know instantly that it was not Effie or Haymitch who made this but Peeta. The pudding is amazing, the chocolate like a fluffy cloud that bursts into a chocolaty river in your mouth. Peeta asks us how we liked it. Both Haymitch and Effie reply and then he looks to me, waiting for my answer. I can tell my opinion means something to him by his giddiness. Why it does I don't know but I say truthfully

"It's brilliant"

He looks down at his plate and smiles. I think he mumbles a thank you, but I can't exactly hear him. After dessert we continue to watch the show. It's quite funny, there's two presenters on it Emily and Sol, Emily from district 7 and Sol from the Capitol. They have both become...how would you say it... The newest Caesar Flickerman. I've watched them a few times before rather than Panem TV. Their show is more real and entertaining and Panem TV is made up of fake rumours and some politics. Haymitch leaves the room for a few minutes and comes back holding up a small plant in his hand. I recognise it from the woods yet can't place my hand on what it's called. Peeta can't seem to think of it either as he asks

"What's with the plant?"

Effie replies, standing up and going to stand beside Haymitch

"Mistletoe. A Christmas tradition is that you kiss your loved one under the mistletoe"

Haymitch looks at me and smiles mischievously

"Me and Effie. Peeta and Katniss. Who's going first?"

I say trying to stay calm

"That's not fair. You two are a couple so you do it but I'm sorry I'm not comfortable doing it"

I feel my cheeks burn bright red toward the end. I look at my lap but take a moment to glance from the corner of my eye at Peeta. He looks slightly disappointed but soon returns to his normal expression. He shrugs his shoulders at Haymitch, like he thinks I'm not looking. I don't know what he meant by it, I don't know if I want to either. So Haymitch and Effie kiss under the mistletoe before returning to the couch to finish the show. Effie spends the time explaining to us how she knows Sol from going to school with her. I wonder if maybe Johanna knows Emily, with both of them being from district 7. Soon enough it's time for Peeta to go and the plan for me staying back works. I offer to stay to clean up, so does Peeta but Haymitch tells him it's fine. He just nods back and begins to put on his coat. I can tell he's still disappointed. Even his thanks and goodbye sounded flat. He shuts the door and then walks off. I'm left standing in the hall, staring at the door in which he just walked out of. I think about how he was disappointed, how all he wanted was a kiss or a hug or to talk. And I shot him down. On Christmas Day. And before I know it I'm putting on my shoes and my coat.

"What are you doing?"

Haymitch asks. As I shut the door I yell

"I'll be back"

It's very hard to run and not slip. When he sees me coming quickly towards him he stops and turns to face me. He opens his mouth to say something as I'm only a few feet away but before he can say anymore than

"Katniss.."

I crash my lips against him.

The kiss is many things, warm get cold as it combines of both his warm lips and the frozen snowflakes dancing through the air

The kiss is many things, warm get cold as it combines of both his warm lips and the frozen snowflakes dancing through the air. At first he does not react but soon his lips begin to kiss me back gently. I hold his face in my hands, his cheeks warm against my cold palms. When my lips stop moving with his and I pull away slightly his eyes flutter open and meet mine. They almost glow in the moonlight and are filled with shock and wonder at my actions. I move my thumb slowly on his cheek and say softly

"Merry Christmas Peeta"

And with that I smile a little before turning and walking back to Haymitch's house. I don't give him time to react or say something but instead walk and don't look back.
