Chapter One

"Up, up, up time for a big, big day!" My mother calls to me mimicking Effie Trinket whom my mother talks about occasionally, and in her opinion, I'm much too young to meet. I groan as I realize that today is the day. It is the anniversary of reaping days where young children went into The Hunger Games. Today at school, rebels and/or victors come in to speak about the games, and the older kids get to watch replays of them. This is the first year I'll be able to watch. I roll out of bed nervous and excited for the day, and go out the door and across the hallway to take a shower. I shut the door behind me, and turn the knob. The water comes spraying out, as I strip and leave my clothes on the floor. The hot water warms over me as I think about the up-coming day. Who will come to our class this year? I wonder. I hope it's Gale Hawthorn. Gale Hawthorn is one of my mother's old friends. I can tell that dad is jealous of him. I wonder why? Once I'm done cleaning, I turn off the shower. I open the curtain, to see my little brother brushing his teeth at the sink.

"Hammo" Haymitch says with a mouth full of toothpaste. I shriek and scream,

"GET OUT OF THE BATHROOM NOW YOU LITTLE PERVERT!!!!!" I say as I yank the curtain over my naked body as I poke my head out.

"Okay, okay" he says as he spits out the toothpaste. He slowly starts backing out when he says,

"It's your fault for leaving the bathroom door unlocked" and he runs out of the room. I grab a towel from the rack, and wrap it around my body with a firm hold as I went over and locked the door. As soon as I turned around, I heard a knock on my door. I took the deepest of breaths and said

"LEAVE ME ALONE- "

"Sweetie?" My mom says. I immediately turn beet red and say

"Yeah?"

"Can I come in?" she says.

"Um, yeah" I say as I cross over and unlock the door. She stands there with a beautiful old dress in her arms.

"I want you to wear this today" she says. "I wore this on my very first reaping day when I was about your age and-well this is your first viewing of the games. It will make you strong. Trust me, be prepared for the impossible. The games have left horrible ugly scars on us and if you can't handle it tell me now." I can't believe it! My own mother thinks I can't handle it! I can and I will.

"I am fine. After all, you saw all of this when you were younger."I say as I take the dress from her. My eyes soften as I say

"Thank-you for the dress. It means a lot to me." My mother nods and heads out the bathroom and closes the door behind her. I sigh and put on the dress. I look in the mirror and do my mother's signature braid. I look at the mirror and marvel at my features. I have my mother's nimble build, and blond hair that is lighter than my father's. I have my father's bright blue eyes though. I brush my teeth quickly and grab my clothes and run out of the bathroom. Crossing to my bedroom, I grab my pajamas and run over to my room and put them in the hamper. I run over to my closet and pull on matching blue shoes. I rush down the stairs and into the kitchen to see my brother, Haymitch, sitting there with my father dressed in a white, collared shirt, and khaki, long pants. He grins up at me while eating his corn flakes covered in milk. I roll my eyes and pour cereal into a bowl. I grabbed a handful of cerial and stuffed it into my mouth chewing slowly. My dad chuckled and said with that special twinkle in his eye

"I see you're all prettied up for today." He says.

I smile and swallow the cerial and say "Well today is the annaversary of the reapings."

He shudders and mutters "How could I forget."

I stuff the rest of the cerial in my mouth and say

"Love you" and kissed and hugged him as well as dragged Haymitch out of his chair and on his way to school.
