Prologue

Normally, standing alone by the ocean in the midst of a summer's midnight would completely freak me out. But for some strange reason, this time I feel entirely tranquil. With the moon shining like a spotlight on the dark ocean, I am almost positive that I have been deserted by all living creatures. Right now, it's just the ocean - and me. The ocean and me. And the moon, highlighting the actions of continuous waves soaking the shore ever so gently.

For a second, I'm sure that I am dreaming.

Until I feel a sharp cooling sensation beneath my toes; the only interaction with any type of nature I have experienced all night. Or at least since I can remember.

But then it hits me. What do I remember? All I know is that I am alone, facing the deep, wondrous ocean that extends for what seems a lifetime and more. But rather than being afraid, intimidated, or even the slightest bit curious, I soak in the echoing of the light waves, drifting in slow motion.

The ocean is calling my name. Jewel is calling my name.

And the only thought that conquers my mind is this: Jewel is gone, but she is no longer far.

But wait...I'm no longer alone.
