A Step Too Close

I felt bad after I left my stubborn mouth open but then again I didn't really like what he said. Of course I can bloody well damn talk, he's the one who needs to talk because at this rate I don't even know who the frick this guy even is.

At this moment in time I was sitting at my desk.

Three weeks ago, Chaydon High School gave us the impeccable opportunity of personalising our desks in our base (where the class hangs out during breaks). I was literally thrilled! You see, I'm the artistic type. The kind who finds the sunset mesmerising, the one who likes to call masterpieces her own but one thing I don't do is show off about it like the others. That's one thing that irritates me.

I can exactly remember every single event of that day. It was a Monday aka the most boring school day as it's the start of the long week and a hangover from the weekend. But this Monday was different. I had a gold clip that kept my fringe out of my eyes, a black apron and a wooden box full of paints, pencils and other findings.

"Right, now boys and girls, you have exactly one hour to turn your desk into a bombshell and make it YOU! Remember to put on things that describe you as a person so think about hobbies, interests, favourites and so on. Now without further ado, you may all now start!" Mr Dazeville chirped.

It was like a marathon race. I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my tiny veins. Sweat trickled down my forehead as I worked with passion. My hands just glided as if I was smoothing down crinkled paper as I began painting my wooden desk with a layer of crisp, clean white. I had everything mapped out in my brain like a Sat Nav. whilst the paint dried, I looked in my cream box of findings and pulled out clear crystal rhinestones, red satin roses and tubes of acrylic paints in a variety of colours. I began painting light pink roses. Then I added white and reds for tone and texture before adding a green stem. The roses were painted as a border on my desk. I completed the look by putting rhinestones on some white lace and gluing it to the perimeters of the edge on the desk. I looked back but wasn't content as I knew I could do much more. So I began placing a mini bow on the top centre of the desk. I then took out more of my acrylic paints to paint butterflies in a variety of colours. Then an idea had come to me. I took out every last of my acrylics and began painting a landscape of a field beneath a dreamy blue sky with the sun's rays dispersing in all directions on the whole of my desk right till it touched the border of roses. I let it air dry for approximately 20 minutes before signing my name in the bottom right hand corner in permanent marker. I stood back in delight whilst Mr Dazeville and the rest of the class awed over my work.

"By golly! Kasey that's incredible! Well done! I shall be telling Miss Hammersmith to view this!" Mr Dazeville said whilst circling around my desk again and again.

Miss Hammersmith was my lovely Art teacher who has the warmest and kindest heart anyone could ever own. And I know for a fact that her heart was definitely not created from a gene.

Theo started walking towards me with Bethany trailing right behind. I looked down at the floor to avoid eye contact but he bent down to meet my eyes. That was when my heart starting beating at 175 miles per hour.

"Kasey I'm so sorry if I offended you. I never meant to hurt your feelings." He apologised.

Now I didn't know if I was going mad or not, but I definitely thought I saw his eyes slide slightly downwards and rotated incredibly slowly - did I forget to mention that I'm an utter observer?

"Mmm it's okay. I'm sorry for snapping, it was unnecessary."

"No no, it was my fault. Let me take the blame and we'll put this in the past okay?"

"Fine by me."

Bethany was about to speak when Mr Dazeville told her to sit down at once and called Theo to come over to him. Poor thing. School was definitely interrupting her speech that day.

She immediately sat down, exasperated.

"Everybody I'd like you to meet Theodore Morela from Alaska today! He has just started Chaydon High so I'd like you all to be on your best behaviour and give him a warm welcome. Theodore you will be sitting in the vacant seat next to Kasey so pop yourself down there." Mr Dazeville gave me the world's goofiest smile but that didn't make me feel relaxed in any way. For all I knew was that Bethany would be biting her gums with rage right now.

"Hey again. At least I get to sit to someone I know." Theo said to me as he put his briefcase under the desk.

"You don't know me yet sunshine." I surprisingly gave a little giggle but then got interrupted by Bethany's sharp turn of her head. The death glare didn't help either.

"I'm guessing Bethany's jealous." Whispered Theo.

"How did you guess?!" I whispered back in surprise.

"I seem have to a history with girls that I can now understand how their minds work."

"Well I wouldn't be surprised at the history of girls. I mean, If I am perfectly honest, you're pretty much classified as a sex bomb."

"Hmmm I wonder if Kasey is now becoming interested!?!" he said, giving a flirtatious wink.

"Don't fluster yourself son! I don't believe in love. All the guys here look at one thing, you're just another one of them so sorry to break your sex-thirsty mind but I'm not interested!"

"Woahhhh! Who said I was sex-thirsty?! Don't judge a book by it's cover, Kasey. I can assure you that I am SO not like that."

"THEO! KASEY! SAVE THE CHIT CHATTER FOR BREAK AND ANSWER THE BLOOMING REGISTER!"

Mr Dazeville was so on his man-period. I could also see Bethany giving me another death glare in the corner of my eye. I never knew she could be such a jealous idiot! I still loved her though. After all she has stuck by me through thick and thin.

Mr Dazeville finally dismissed us to go to our first lesson which was Maths.

"Woah! You painted this desk yourself huh?" asked Theo as he gently stroked the table and continued walking around it, inspecting from all angles.

"Uh huh." I replied in such effort as I tried to crawl under my desk to get the pencil which fell out of my bag.

Although this wasn't a smart move as Theo ended up tripping over my body and fell flat on me. I turned to see if he was okay and was alarmed to see his face inches from mine. He instantly let out a hysterical laugh but straight away stopped after seeing my face. I didn't have an expression on my face apart from the fact that I was now eyeing up his face. He was even more beautiful than I had initially thought. His amber eyes glowed a friendly warm orange whilst his skin glistened beneath my eyes. I thought I could feel his hand slowly crawling up my arm... or maybe that was my imagination and he was just trying to get up.

"I can't believe you Kasey! I thought you were my best friend! All this time you were chatting him up, giving him the eye and now you're all over him and just sitting there like you're bloody paralysed! Well you know what?! You can HAVE him! After all I guess all you care about is boys!" yelled Bethany who then ran off out of the room.

I shoved Theo off of me and scrambled on to my feet to run after her when a soft hand pulled me back.

"Don't run after her. All she needs is time. Just talk to her later when she's piped down a bit. Sorry for falling over on top of you, I didn't see you there. I hope I haven't ruined things between you and Bethany." Theo looked like a puppy that had just been told off. Bless.

"No it's okay... I didn't mean to make you fall. I was just getting my pencil. Yeah I guess you're right. Maybe she'll be okay later on."

We didn't really talk to each other on the way to Maths. We both knew that we felt uncomfortable and awkward. Bethany was very stupid though. She literally gave it away that she liked Theo in an unflattering manner. And that my friends, is something that you should never do.
