A hint of Courage

The buzzing phone woke her up

"Hello," she said hoarsely

"Good morning, Haseena, I'm sorry Cheeta said you'll be up by now"

"Neeraj! Oh my god, it's six! I am sorry, I had a headache last night, and the pill made me sleep through the alarm, is everything okay?"

"Yes, I got your email last night and I have meetings throughout the day, so I had to wake you up. Congrats on the paper and your job getting permanent. You are good to proceed now, it is time-consuming, but I don't see a reason for you not getting approved."

"Thank you so much, Neeraj. Have a nice day. See you soon" she smiled as the morning sun lit her room.

Haseena walked into the living room; the silent house tensed her

"Sachi..." she called out

"We are up here" Santu shouted, Haseena quickly ascended the steps, and Sachi's door was slightly ajar

"What happened?"

"She fell sick, severe cold and fever," Santosh said caressing Sachi's head

"Did you consult the doctor? What did the doctor say" Haseena asked tensed, sweating profusely

"I talked to him, he said it's because of seasonal change. He gave the prescription. If anything, serious, we'll take her to hospital, however for of now, she is doing well"

"Okay, keep me informed"

"Okay. Did you talk to her?"

"No. I'm here to give you the invite to tomorrow's party at the university, the meteorite shower will appear around 8. You don't worry about it, just take care of Sachi" Haseena sat beside Santosh, looking at Sachi

"Hasu..." Santosh said holding her hand

"I don't know what to do, if something happens everything will fall apart and I can't Santu. I'm scared," Haseena said tears rolling down

"Honey, COURAGE IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF FEAR, RATHER THAN THE JUDGEMENT THAT SOMETHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN FEAR. If your love for her is true, can't you take a leap of faith? Isn't it better than regret" Santosh said wiping her tears

"You didn't just quote Princess Diaries" they laughed

"I'll think" Haseena sighed

The morning sun blazed into Karishma's office; a typical Indian police office. The station had its usual chaotic rhythm, complaints, tea breaks, constables moving around, and files piling up however the cabin stood silent as Karishma's mind, she sat with a file opened before her however her mind running elsewhere, knock on the door brought her to the present, she adjusted her wounded left hand, a gift from the recent mission, sitting erect she ordered in

"Madam, you have a post" a constable handed her a letter

"Thank you"

A handwritten letter addressed to her. The familiar fragrance reminded her, her special one, as she slowly opened it, the world stood stagnant for her.

Haseena stood at her window, taking in the evening breeze. The wait slowly got on her nerves. The party offered her no relief. The ringing phone distracted her line of thought.

"Prepared for the party?" Santosh asked

"Yes, will be leaving in 10. How is Sachi?"

"She is doing well, sleeping peacefully. I hope I can be there with you" she sighed

"Honey, take care of her. I'll try to drop by if it's not too late. When will Cheeta be home?"

"Maybe tomorrow? So, did you talk to her?"

"I sent her a letter" Haseena whispered

"What? You sent her a letter! Dude, you have the guts to break her heart face to face, however, to apologise you can't even call her! Anyhow I think it's good that at least you decided to speak"

"I... I don't know how to face her, anyhow I need to leave. Bye honey"

"Bye, take care"

The party is held in a convention hall college-owned on the beachfront, to see the showers the terrace is decorated for the party, with lights around, and the sea breeze ruffling their dresses. Haseena wore a silk peacock blue sari, neatly pinned to avoid any mishap. Meeting the heads of the departments, she moved through the crowd. The dean of the college was congratulating her when her phone rang. Excusing herself she answered

"Hasu, Sachi is not feeling good, I gave her medicine one hour ago, and till now the temperature hasn't gone down. I'm scared Hasu, I know you are at the party, can you please come home, we have to take her to the hospital" Santosh cried

"I... I'll be there in 5 minutes honey, don't worry she'll be alright," Haseena said teary-eyed.

Taking leave from the dean, fighting the tears, she drove as fast as the weekend traffic allowed. Stopping the car in front of the house, she ran into the house, stopping in front of Sachi's room, she stood confused. The house is dark and silent except for the rhythmic tick-tock of the clock.
