Gossip Girl

Long ago, when European royals grew bored with palace balls they took a page from the peons, and added some pageantry. Couture and Canapés are just another Saturday night. Until you add a mask. But preparing for a ball is an event in itself. Which is why queens invented handmaidens.

"So Kati mentioned something about a custom-made corset. And I hear there are wigs involved." Serena remarks. Me, Serena and Blair are all led on Blair's bed discussing Blair's party tonight. "It's a masquerade. You have to conceal your identity." Blair states obviously, "But I do have something special planned for Nate tonight. It's a game. It's a scavenger hunt. Nate starts the night with a clue, which leads him to a lady-in-waiting who gives him a clue to the next lady." She explains. "Wait, you have ladies now?" I question. "If he finds me before midnight when the masks come off, he can claim his prize." Blair continues. "And what's that?" Serena asks. Blair gives her a look and raises her eyebrows. "Oh. Yeah, right. Sorry." Serena realises that Blair means she is the prize. "I just figured that after everything that's happened or hasn't happened, I should find some way to make it special." I feel quite uncomfortable when Blair talks of Nate's and her sexual life. "Well, that's really romantic, Blair. Really." Serena tells her. "Look, if you don't want me to come tonight, I totally understand." I say feeling the tension between the two of us. "What? No, I want you to come. In fact, I was hoping that both of you would be part of my ladies. Would you give Nate the last Clues." Blair requests. "Are you sure you want me to?" I question. "Tonight is all about starting over. I trust you. And him." Blair assures me. "Well, then I will be honoured to serve you, my queen." I bow to her jokingly as the three of us laugh slightly. "Well, Serena, you're bringing Dan, right?" Blair asks her. Serena looks at her and gives her a weak smile, "I know him. A masked ball. Dan would never want to go to something that pretentious. Where he has to wear a mask and a tux." "He likes you. He would wear a tux, and a mask and one of my mother's dresses if it meant that he could go out with you. Come on. What, are you worried that he already has a date? I mean, he is Dan Humphrey." Blair laughs. "Shut up." Serena mutters, "I don't know. I guess a masked ball is better than a regular party. Because then all those kids from school that he hates, he won't even recognise them." Serena shrugs. "All right, invite him, I insist." Blair hands her a phone. She finds his contact and calls him. "Hey, hi." She greets him as he answers. "Go ahead. Do it." Blair encourages. "Uhhh. Hey, I was wondering, are you doing anything tonight?... Good, because there's this thing, and you're probably gonna think it's stupid but- ... Who's that?" Just then Jenny walks in carrying a stack of boxes and a few bags, "Hi, Blair. What do you want me to do with this stuff?" "Oh, just leave them over there, that's fine. I left you another list." Blair points to a sheet of paper on her table near the door. Jenny picks it up quickly glances over it and then rushes back out. "I'm sorry, what?" Serena continues, "No. Uhh. No, never mind. Thank you, have a good day. Bye." Serena hangs up the call. "I think I need a date." Serena says. "Well, that makes two of us." I add on.
