through burns of wax upon his skin,
that apollo would grant him life-
that poseidon would reach
and cushion his fall?
did icarus pray that zephyr would carry him
along the winds,
with wings of bronze left to burn?
did daedalus pray that hephaestus
bless the wings,
that apollo spare his son,
that they would not meet the wrath
of sea-maned horses
did icarus know of despair in his last laugh,
had elpis abandoned him?
did he know of gods?
did he miss them?
