“Reed.”

“Reed, wake up.”

“Reed, seriously, you’re going to be late.”

“Reed Jillian Hadley, get up before I find one of Gus’ little bombs in the backyard and drop it on your face.”

I moaned, and despite the way my bed held me down and called to me, I rolled onto my back and opened my eyes hesitantly. As my blurry vision started to clear, I found Maya standing at my bedside, her hands on her hips and her mouth twisted into a scowl.

‘Why must you be loud?” I mumbled, my voice coming out hoarse and dry.

“Because school starts in forty-five minutes,” Maya replied, and she gestured towards me, “And you, Reed, are still asleep.”

“Yes,” I confirmed, snuggling into my comforter, “I like to sleep. It’s nice.”

“That’s fantastic,” Maya replied sarcastically, as she realized she wasn’t getting anywhere with me. Maya thought for a moment, and as her mouth stretched into a smile, I got an uneasy feeling.

“Why do you have your scary face on?” I asked, pushing myself further into my mattress to get as far away from Maya as I could.

“If you don’t get up and get dressed,” Maya explained, crossing her arms over her chest, “I’ll steal your car, and you’ll have to walk the twenty minutes to school.”

“I’m up!”

I half climbed, half stumbled out of bed and pushed my hair out of my eyes. Maya grinned victoriously and started out of my bedroom. “I’m gonna go see if I can get some food,” she called over her shoulder, “Be down soon, Reed, or The Grouch is mine.” The Grouch was the name most of my friends called my car, because it was green and the interior was a bit rough looking.

I wasn’t complaining, though. As long as I had wheels, I was not complaining.

I stumbled across the room and swore loudly as my baby toe managed to jam itself into the sharp corner of my bed. I grabbed my throbbing foot and hopped into the bathroom adjoining my bedroom, and I leaned against the sink.

I glanced in my mirror and grimaced at myself. I was not a morning beauty. My skin was dry, and there was usually a drool chain on the corner of my mouth and dark circles under my eyes. My hair was snarly, and at times, the roots were oily and just gross.

I stepped into the miracle machine, commonly known as a shower, and scrubbed at my body with soap. As I started to wake up, I washed my hair and waited a few more minutes before turning off the pleasantly warm spray. I wrapped myself in a towel bordering on damp, and I grabbed a comb and worked the snarls out of my hair.

After brushing my teeth, I padded back into my bedroom. I gave the deadly corner of my bed a hard stare, and then I stooped over my dresser and pulled open the top drawer. I pulled on a pair of underwear, and I slipped into a plain black bra.

I wrapped my hair up in the towel and shimmied into a pair of black denim shorts. I searched for my favorite t-shirt, but it was nowhere to be seen. After a good five minutes, I caught sight of something green, which was the color of my shirt, and I turned to see Gus, sound asleep and wrapped in my shirt.
