Pain knows my middle name. Pain shares my secrets that she swore not to tell another soul. Pain hand feeds me my meals and makes sure I chew them well. She washes my feet and brushes my hair. Pain treats me well, as long as I obey. So I obey. I ask for permission to leave the dinner table once I've finished my vegetables. I wash her dirty laundry and hang it up on the line to dry. She reads me a book at bedtime and kisses my forehead goodnight. She opens my curtains in the morning to let in the sun and lays out my clothes for the day. Pain and I live well, side by side. We are roommates and lovers. She's never late on rent and always tells me she loves me before leaving for work. When she's gone, I miss her. I don't think I know how to be a person without her.
