Chapter Thirty-Nine

Constantine Makes a Fool of Himself

The Ramsey twins were the picture of Godly children. As chosen ones they, like Gabriel, had more genetics from their godly parent than mortal – and it showed. They were very tall and their skin almost glowed, somehow tanned even when living in the arctic.

As Ronnie's plane lifted off into the air and became a tiny speck in a sea of dark clouds, the Ramsey twins took charge. "C'mon, you guys must be exhausted." Basil said and guided them to a small footpath.

Noel stumbled over every rock while the others navigated their way easily; it was times like these that she missed Gabriel. He would joke about it a little, but hold her steady; she missed his hand on her shoulder, keeping her upright and out of harm. The twins were suggesting they get a little sleep before they took off, especially since they wouldn't get another chance for – well, they didn't know how long.

As Noel tried not to kill herself, she subtly listened to the conversation behind her; Constantine and Verity were mumbling to each other, just a little behind everyone else.

"You said you were going to visit." she whispered; Noel saw Veriy ducking her head out of the corner of her eye.

Constantine sounded nervous; calm, cool and collected Constantine was nervous! "I know I did, but there was so much going on."

"I understand that, but you said –"

"I know what I said." Constantine sounded so guilty it made Noel feel bad. "But my best friend went missing, Ver, I couldn't just drop everything to come and visit."

There were a few beats of silence, then Verity spoke softly. "I just missed you."

"I missed you, too."

"And I have a surprise –"

"Verity, c'mon!" Basil called from the front of the line. "I need your help with the gate, its stuck again."

Verity sighed and moved past Noel, leaving her with Constantine. Noel looked suspiciously at her friend, who looked somehow even more unhappy than he'd been the entire trip.

"Stan?"

"Yeah?" he answered miserably, looking at Noel with hopeless eyes.

"Ah...never mind." Deciding it was best to leave it alone, Noel followed everyone into the Ramsey home, thinking she should really re-thing her morals.
