The Bridge

I bought the perfume that I tried
from back when I was in your life.
I don't know how to say it,
but it smells like remembering.

I still wonder if you know
that you broke my skin and bones.
Thought I could make it on my own,
but this feels like surrendering.

They say the bridge from childhood
to adulthood is a love that goes wrong.
And I think it's always a love
you don't see coming.
I'd brace for it if I could,
try and feel it move along.
But it's always the love
you never see coming.

Envisioned futures in your town,
but you went and let me down,
and now I feel like I can't
lift myself up from the ground.

Knew the houses and the streets;
kept all my coffee store receipts
because I thought I found something
that would keep me hanging 'round.

But the bridge from childhood
to adulthood is a love that goes wrong.
And it's always a love
you don't see coming.
I'd brace for it if I could,
I'd go back, I swear, I would.
'Cause it's always the love
you shouldn't see coming.

And when I reached the age to drink,
it seemed to make me double think
how every time that I would sink,
you'd always push me to the brink.

You could have saved me, I really think...

And they say the bridge from childhood
to adulthood is a love that goes wrong.
Do they say if that love still hurts
all life long?
