Polly's POV

"Anyone see anything last night?" I asked the boys, they all shook their heads.
"Okay, John you better go" I said, he grabbed his bag and coat, heading out the door for school
"See if you can get anything out of David" I shouted after him.

"I caught her the other night" Arthur mumbled
"She was down by the canal, drinking and crying" he said
I hated seeing Mariana like this. Poor thing was just a child.

She was out at all hours of the night, drinking or walking, crying and telling whoever found her that she'd heard her mother, saw her and followed her.

The funeral hadn't helped her mental state either
A gypsy funeral, led through the streets and burned up on the hill in a vardo.
I think that's the day that fully broke her mind.

That set David off on a rebellious path.
Left poor Nala without a mother.

"Why won't she let us in?" Tommy asked
I wasn't sure. She wouldn't let anyone in the house
"I don't know Thomas, she's grieving" I said simply.

"Get that will you?" I asked when there was a knock on the door
"Sure" he said, getting up.
I carried on folding the washing, Michael and Anna sat by the window playing together.

"Uh Pol" Tommy said unsure
"Yeah?" I called, looking to the door
There was a couple stood behind Thomas
"Mrs Gray?" A woman asked
"Who are you?" I asked
"We're from the parish..." the man spoke.

The parish?

Arthur Sr's POV

"No, no you're not taking my fucking wife away for a trip in the countryside" I snapped at Charlie.
"She isn't getting any better, she needs a break" he said
"And that's with you is it?" I laughed in disbelief

"You think I don't see you? You think I don't know how much you want my wife. Get it through your head Charlie, she married me not you!" I shouted
"You got her pregnant" he said bitterly
I swung for him, landing a punch to his cheek.

"Run away from it all you want, she's seeing things Arthur, she needs help, proper help" he argued.

"Get out" I said
He hesitated for a moment
"I'll be at my yard later, if you see sense then bring her, we can leave tonight" he said, before leaving.
